Augustine Moves Into Fan Vote For Sullivan Award

Voting is now live to help Michigan State sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) advance into the group of finalists for the AAU Sullivan Award, given annually to the top amateur athlete in the United States.

The AAU Sullivan Award honors the most outstanding collegiate, Olympic or similar level athlete in the United States. It has been presented annually by the AAU since 1930 as a salute to founder and past president of the Amateur Athletic Union, and pioneer in amateur sports, James E. Sullivan. Based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism, the AAU Sullivan Award goes far beyond athletic accomplishments and honors those who have shown strong moral character.

A preseason All-Big Ten selection and a standout for USA Hockey, Trey Augustine is one of the top professional prospects in all of college hockey. A second-round (no. 41) draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings at the 2023 NHL draft, he has won five medals at IIHF juniors (U18 and U20) events and skated for Team USA in the 2024 men's senior World Championships, one of two collegians among a roster of NHL players.

A sophomore at Michigan State who turns 20 in late February, he is twice a Mike Richter Award semifinalist as the top goaltender and for the second straight season, is the youngest starting goaltender in college hockey. The Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominee and has helped elevate Michigan State hockey back into the national spotlight, backstopping his current MSU squad a 22-5-3 overall record (through Feb.18) – but also Team USA to a second consecutive gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Junior (U20) Championships in January.

At Michigan State, the second-ranked Spartans have been ranked in the top four of the national polls for the entire season.   Augustine is one of just three goaltenders who have played at least 67 percent of his team's games and has played a strength of schedule among the top 10 in the country. Augustine is second among Big Ten goalies in goals against average (2.07, 11th NCAA), save percentage (second, .926, 14th NCAA) and ranks first in the Big Ten and ninth nationally in wins (15). He is also second in the league in games played (23) and minutes played (1393:47). Augustine owns a 3-1-2 record against teams ranked in the top five in the national poll and 8-4-2 against teams ranked in the top 20 at the time of the game.

Augustine's impressive numbers between the pipes have come against some of the most lethal scorers in the country. The goalie has faced 11 of the nation's point-per-game scorers in 20 games this season (of Augustine's 23 played), and has allowed 13 goals (and 27 points) to those players.

Augustine has played all but seven MSU games this season, missing four games for the IIHF World Junior Championships. At this year's (2025) World Juniors, Augustine compiled a .917 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average, appearing in five of Team USA's seven games.   He played in the semifinals and gold-medal games, and guided Team USA to its first-ever back-to-back gold medals as the starting goalie in both 2024 and 2025. In fact, his participation in WJC gave him (literally) no holiday break - he reported to Team USA camp the day after MSU completed its series at Minnesota on Dec. 14 and he returned to MSU practice 36 hours after winning a gold medal in Ottawa on Jan. 5.

Along the way, Augustine became the winningest goaltender in Team USA History at the IIHF World Junior Championships, with 12 all-time victories in a record three appearances. Overall, he is a five-time medal winner for Team USA at U20 World Juniors (2025-gold; 2024-gold; 2023-bronze) and U18 Worlds (2023-gold; 2022-silver).

Only five times previously – and never for Team USA - has a goalie won two gold medals in U20 World Junior play (Marc Denis (CAN), Jamie Storr (CAN), Yevgeni Belosheikin (URS), Andrei Medvedev (RUS), Alexander Tyzhnykh (URS).   Augustine leaves U20 World Juniors behind having won three medals (two golds, one bronze), something done only three times previously (Kari Lehtonen (FIN), Yevgeni Belosheikin (URS), Andrei Vasilevski (RUS).

With three combined junior gold (U18 and U20), Augustine is among elite company, as it has only been done by seven fellow Americans - fellow goalie Jack Campbell, and skaters Seth Jones, Jacob Trouba, Jason Zucker, Rocco Grimaldi, Gabe Perrault, and Zeev Buium.
