EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State Women's Basketball junior forward Grace VanSlooten was named one of the top 10 candidates for the Cheryl Miller Award, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) on Wednesday.
She is one of three Big Ten players on the list along with Indiana's Yarden Garzon and Ohio State's Cotie McMahon. The award honors the nation's top small forwards.
VanSlooten is in her first season at Michigan State after transferring from Oregon. She is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. She is fifth in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.529). She is also 10th in the conference in blocks with 1.14 bpg.
The Cheryl Miller Award, in its eighth year, honors the top small forwards in women's Division I women's college basketball. It is named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in both of the remaining rounds starting on Friday, Feb. 7, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, the Top 10 list will be narrowed to just five, and in late March, the five finalists will be presented to Erving, Miller, and the Hall of Fame's selection committees, where winners will be selected. The Selection Committees for the Julius Erving and Cheryl Miller Awards are composed of top men's and women's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
No. 20 Michigan State is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 9 hosting Michigan for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
