Bats Come Alive in Softball’s Win Over Western Michigan

A win improves MSU's record to 1-4 overall while Western moves to 1-2 on the weekend. The Spartans return to the dirt next weekend in Athens, Ga. where they'll take on Georgia, Longwood and Western Carolina at the Red & Black showcase.
Freshman Jacey Schuler (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory tossing 6.1 innings and striking out five. Schuler allowed a lead-off home run in the first inning before proceeding to toss five consecutive scoreless innings in the circle. Senior Faith Guidry came on to pitch in relief with one out and bases loaded in the sixth, inducing a double play to end the game.
Junior Sydney Doloszycki turned in a three-hit performance at the plate and came around to score three times. Doloszycki drove in a pair on a two-run home run in the seventh. Senior Macy Lee and sophomore Hannah Greer also posted multi-hit performances, each with two hits on the day. Greer hit one of two, two-run homers for the Spartans in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Senior Mik Anthony reached base twice with a two-run homer in the fourth and a walk.
Sophomore Kendall Smiley and junior Hannah Hawley each swiped bases for MSU. Hawley joined Lee and junior Britain Beshears with one RBI on the day.
Beshears got the scoring started in MSU's final game of the Candrea Classic on Saturday, doubling to left-center to score Smiley from second. A lead-off home run by Western Michigan's Payton Kelly knotted the game up at 1-1 until the fourth inning.

The Spartans used a pair of two-run homers off the bats of Anthony and Greer to break open a 5-1 lead over the Broncos in the fourth. Doloszycki singled to set up Anthony, and Schuler reached on a fielder's choice prior to Greer's second blast of the weekend.

Michigan State extended its lead to 7-1 in the sixth following RBI singles off the bats off Lee and Hawley. Doloszycki added even more insurance in the seventh with a two-run blast to left field.

MSU found itself in rough waters in the bottom of the seventh when a trio of WMU singles loaded the bases with one out. Guidry entered the game in relief of Schuler in the circle and quickly induced a game-ending double play to end the threat.
