MADISON, Wis. – Michigan State wrestling was defeated in B1G dual action on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 25-12 dual to Wisconsin from UW Field House.
Sunday's loss wasn't without spots of positivity though, with redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III claiming his first bonus point victory of the season, true freshman Cory Thomas earning his first career dual victory and redshirt freshman Max Vanadia extending his dual winning streak to three.
Michigan State moves to 4-7 overall (0-6 B1G) while Wisconsin improved to 5-10 (1-6 B1G). The Spartans have two more conference opportunities next week when they travel to Piscataway, N.J. for a Friday night dual at No. 12-ranked Rutgers before returning to East Lansing for a Sunday afternoon dual against No. 19-ranked Michigan on Big Ten Network.
Wisconsin built a 12-0 lead over MSU early on winning bouts at 125, 133 and 141 pounds.
Jones got to work early in the 149-pound match however, working a Russian wrist snap to take a quick 3-0 lead in the first period. A reversal by Jones put him ahead 6-1 with 1:29 to wrestle in the second period where he quickly double-legged Wisconsin's Aidan Medora. Jones let Medora up for the escape but caught him in a cowcatcher and put him to his back for the fall. It's the first bonus point victory of the season for Jones.
The Badgers extended their lead to 22-6 with wins at 157, 165 and 174 pounds. Graduate student Jay Nivison went to sudden victory in his match at 165, but Wisconsin's Cody Goebel found the late takedown. Redshirt freshman Jack Conley made his dual debut for MSU at 157 pounds.
Thomas made his second career dual appearance on Sunday and picked up his first career dual win at 184 pounds in a high-scoring affair. He led 7-2 after one but that advantage was cut to 11-9 heading to the third. Thomas started the third on top and caught Wisconsin's Matthew Jens in a roll-through tilt for a full set of back points giving him a 15-9 lead. Jens tallied a reversal to trail 15-12, but Thomas secured a bout winning takedown with 45 seconds to go.
Redshirt freshman Remy Cotton led 10-2 with short time in the second period, but a late takedown by Wisconsin's Wyatt Ingham cut his advantage to 10-5. Ingham recorded three takedowns in the third period to upset Cotton, 14-12.
Ending the afternoon at heavyweight, Vanadia gave up the first takedown of the match but ended the first period with a 4-3 lead after a takedown with 12 seconds to go. Vanadia earned an escape and takedown in the second before getting to a single leg shot with 1:05 to go in the third to build an 11-3 lead over Gannon Rosenfeld.
