This Week In Spartan Athletics – March 11
Here's a look at the week ahead (March 11-17) for Michigan State Athletics:
Hockey
No. 2 Michigan State opens the Big Ten Tournament Saturday by hosting Notre Dame at Munn Ice Arena at 6 p.m. After a quarterfinal bye, the top-seeded Spartans will face the No. 7 seed Fighting Irish, who knocked off No. 2 seed Minnesota in a three-game series last weekend in Minneapolis.
Baseball
Michigan State is slated to host Michigan Wednesday in the Spartans' home opener at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium. This will be a non-conference game between the two rivals, who are scheduled to meet in a three-game Big Ten set in May in Ann Arbor. Conference play begins for MSU with three games beginning Friday at Iowa. At 12-3, MSU is off to its best start since 2016.
Men's Tennis
After taking a pair of Big Ten matches last weekend, No. 36 Michigan State hosts No. 8 Arizona on Wednesday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. The Spartans then return to Big Ten action, hitting the road to take on No. 68 Wisconsin on Friday and No. 49 Nebraska on Sunday.
Softball
Michigan State opens Big Ten play with four neutral-site contests in Oklahoma City. Thursday and Friday, the Spartans will play Minnesota, followed by Saturday and Sunday single games against Northwestern. MSU enters the week on a positive note, having won four of their last five, including three straight.
Track and Field
Junior Elle Adrian will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the weight throw. Adrian will compete Friday in the championships being held in Virginia Beach, Virginia. On Feb 8., she broke the school record with a throw of 22.35 meters at the Michigan Invitational. She placed fourth in the event at the Big Ten Championships.
Men's Basketball
Following an outright regular-season Big Ten Championship, No. 7 Michigan State is the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans open their postseason Friday at noon, when they will face the winner of Thursday's contest between No. 8 Oregon and No. 9 Indiana. The Spartans lead all conference schools with six Big Ten Tournament championships. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is Sunday night at 6 p.m. on CBS, when the Spartans will learn who and where they are playing.
Women's Basketball
There are no games this week for Michigan State, but the Spartans will learn their NCAA Tournament seeding on Sunday night during the Selection Show at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
