MSU posts three singles victories.
The Big Ten Conference announced on March 18 that the team result of the March 14 men's tennis match between Michigan State and Wisconsin has been overturned. The action was taken after Michigan State played a lineup different than what was approved by the coaches' group during the midweek lineup review process, in violation of Big Ten Conference game management policies and procedures.
As a result, the No. 6 singles point is awarded to Wisconsin to result in a 4-3 match victory for the Badgers. Individual student-athletes' records and rankings will not be impacted.
MADISON, Wis. – Michigan State men's tennis battled to a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 68 Wisconsin, rallying back after dropping the doubles point.
The win marks the Spartans' first road victory of the season.
MSU continues the road trip this weekend with more Big Ten Conference action, as the Spartans take on Nebraska on Sunday.
MSU won its fourth-straight match making their record 8-5 on the season. Wisconsin turns 0-3 in conference play, losing their first match back at home after four matches on the road.
Hoping to continue their success in doubles, MSU used the same doubles lineup as the last three matches. Junior Ozan Baris and redshirt sophomore Aristotelis Thanos in the No. 1 spot, with the brother duo of senior Max Sheldon and freshman Mitchell Sheldon in the second spot for the Spartans. Sophomore Taym Alazmeh and freshman Vuk Radjenovic rounded out the final doubles pairings for the Spartans.
Oliver Olsson and Thomas Zlatohlavek secured a 7-5 win for Wisconsin over MSU's No. 53-ranked duo of Ozan Baris and Aristotelis Thanos.
Edouard Aubert and Matthew Fullerton clinched the doubles point for Wisconsin with a 6-4 win over MSU's Taym Alazmeh and Vuk Radjenovic.
With the doubles point in favor of the home-standing Badgers, the remaining match went unfinished.
The doubles point went to the Badgers, making the Spartans fight hard to pull off a win in Madison.
The Spartans' first win of the day came from the No. 3 spot Max Sheldon in singles. He defeated Thomas Zlatohlavek (WIS) in a quick match, winning 6-4, 6-4.
Next door was Thanos who put up another point for the Spartans. He took down Patrik Meszaros (WIS) in an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win.
Freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev battled Edouard Albert (WIS), but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Albert defeated Rakhmatullayev 6-3, 6-2.
Next in line comes Baris, with another win for the Spartans. Defeating Michael Minasyan (WIS) 6-3, 6-4, Baris helped the Spartans pull ahead on the scoreboard.
Grabbing another point for the Spartans, and clinching the victory, was freshman Mitchell Sheldon. After a long battle with Collin Beduhn, Sheldon came out on top with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win. This back-and-forth match was hard fought, and Sheldon strengthened the Spartan lead.
The final match featured a showdown between Matthew Forbes and Matthew Fullerton. Both players gave it their all in a hard-fought contest, but Forbes was not able to come out on top. Fullerton won the match 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
