Spartans Final Day In Greenville Spoiled By Blazers

MSU wraps up Greenville residency 6-2 with Sunday’s loss.
MSU was denied its unbeaten weekend by UAB, splitting the weekend series with the Blazers, after the Spartans won Friday's match-up, 5-2.
UAB extended a 2-1 lead in the third to a 6-1 lead by the top of the sixth, only to have MSU counter with a five-run frame in the home half of the sixth stanza to tie it up. However, the Blazers countered with a five-run inning of their own to pull away, taking advantage of MSU walks and errors throughout the game.
"I wasn't very happy with how we played today, it's tough to beat anybody when you walk 12 guys and make five errors, but at the same time, I was proud of our guys for coming back there in the sixth inning. We hadn't played well early and had a big five-run sixth inning to tie it up, so we never quit. Our guys played hard and I was really proud of the effort, but unfortunately, it kind of got away from us there in the eighth. It's an unfortunate way to end a really good week and a very good trip, but we'll be ready to go this week."
Sunday concluded MSU's eight-game, 10-day residency at Fluor Field, as the Spartans finished First Pitch Invitational action with a 3-1 mark, part of going 6-2 for the eight games.
"It's always the best week of the year for us," Boss said. "The Greenville Drive and their staff are just incredible to work with for our team. From the groundskeepers, the front office staff, the clubhouse staff, everyone, they just really treats us like their own. That's what really makes this trip so special, they welcome us with open arms and roll out the red carpet for us in every extent. It's a great taste of baseball at the next level for our guys. When you combine a beautiful ballpark with tremendous people, it's a formula for a winning success that they have down here, and we're very fortunate that we get to experience it for 10 days."
Michigan State is 12-3 overall on the season, the Spartans' best start to a season since 2016. UAB improved to 13-3 with the win.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, before the Blazers took a 2-1 lead in the third, adding two more in the fourth and one each in both the fifth and sixth frames for a 6-1 advantage.
MSU's deficit didn't last very long, as the Spartans quickly tied it up by hanging a "5" on the Fluor Field manual scoreboard on the Green Monster, with all five runs coming with two outs.
Sophomore outfielder Parker Picot got the runs going, coming to bat with the bases full of Spartans and knocked a chopper to third, where the UAB third baseman misplayed it and all three baserunners scampering around. After junior outfielder Jake Dresselhouse drew a walk, sophomore Randy Seymour smacked a double off the Monster to drive in Picot and Dresselhouse and tie the game up at 6-all.
The score stayed stuck at 6-6 for only an inning, before the Blazers scorched five runs in the top of the eighth for an 11-6 lead. MSU got a run back in the home half of the eighth to get within 11-7, but couldn't get any closer as UAB added another run in the top of the ninth and the Spartans were unable to score in their last at bat to end the game and snap MSU's three-game win streak.
The 19 combined runs were scored on 20 combined hits, with UAB knocking out 13 and MSU having seven. The teams also combined for nine errors with four by the Blazers and a season-high five by the Spartans.
MSU also yielded 12 walks on the day.
The Green & White's seven hits came from seven different Spartans, with senior outfielder JT Sokolove, senior designated hitter Nick Williams, senior infielder Sam Busch, graduate catcher Caleb Berry, Picot, Seymour and senior pinch-hitter Christian Williams tallied the hits. Picot knocked a home run, while Busch and Seymour added doubles.
