OXFORD, Ohio – Michigan State softball is bringing a three-game winning streak back to East Lansing following a 10-1 run rule victory over Northern Kentucky on Sunday at Miami Softball Stadium.
The Spartans improve to 7-9 overall, going 3-1 at the Miami RedHawks softball tournament. It was the final tune-up for MSU who begins Big Ten play next week in Oklahoma City where they'll face Minnesota and Northwestern twice each on March 13-16.
Senior Faith Guidry (2-3) earned her second win of the weekend in the circle pitching three scoreless frames. Guidry struck out three and allowed just two hits. It took the Norse 2.2 innings to tally their first hit. Senior Madison Taylor entered in relief allowing one hit and one earned run along with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
It was a stand-out performance offensively for the Spartans who tallied seven base knocks, including two from each of freshman Ava Coffinger and junior Britain Beshears. Sophomore Hannah Greer, senior Macy Lee and Beshears tallied two RBI apiece. Junior Kaelin Cash drove in one on her second home run of the season, a solo shot to dead center field. Cash and Besehars both drew walks, with Beshears finishing a perfect 3-for-3 reaching base on Sunday.
MSU quickly got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when a Beshears double and a Lee sac fly pushed runs across.
The Spartans blew the doors off with a seven-run third inning, scoring seven on five hits and a Norse error. MSU batted around in the inning with Coffinger tallying both of her hits in the frame. Michigan State scored two on a Beshears single to left and brought two more runners home one batter later when Greer laced a double down the left field line. Lee sent a ball to left for her second sac fly of the afternoon before the scoring ended on a perfectly executed double steal by Coffinger and freshman Natalia Kenyatta that saw Kenyatta steal home.
Guidry retired the first eight batters she faced before a pair of Norse singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. The senior induced an inning-ending groundout to strand three and end the threat.
Cash extended Michigan State's advantage to 10-0 in the fourth on a solo home run to center, her second long ball of the season.
Northern Kentucky got one run back in the fifth on a solo home run, but the Spartans had put the ball game well out of reach. Freshman Sophie Holverstott made her MSU debut in the top of the fifth with a pinch-hit appearance before staying in to catch in the bottom half of the inning.
