
Softball Puts on Masterclass in Sweep of Detroit Mercy

MSU improves to 12-18 overall while Detroit Mercy falls to 5-19. The Spartans return to Secchia Stadium on Friday, April 4 for a non-conference doubleheader against Toledo. Michigan State softball alumnae Jessica Bracamonte (2008-11) serves as head coach for the Rockets.
Game One – Michigan State 2, Detroit Mercy 1
Freshman Carsyn Cassady (2-1) picked up her second win of the season going 5.0 innings allowing just five hits and zero earned runs. Cassady struck out a season-high six batters before senior Faith Guidry entered to collect her first save of the season. Guidry went 2.0 perfect innings allowing no hits, no walks and striking out three.
Junior Sydney Doloszycki posted the lone multi-hit performance of game one, coming up big in a crucial spot in the fourth inning with her fifth home run of the campaign. Seniors Macy Lee and Jenae Wash, and juniors Britain Beshears and Kaelin Cash also collected base hits for MSU.
Cash opened the scoring for MSU in the third inning, coming through in the clutch with a two-out RBI double down the third base line to bring Beshears home from second.

Detroit Mercy tied the game up on a sac fly in the top of the fourth, but the Spartans were quick to respond when Doloszycki sent a lead-off home run over the fence in left for her fifth long ball of the season.

The Titans loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning before sophomore Hannah Greer snagged a liner at second base to end the Detroit Mercy threat. Guidry entered from the bullpen in the sixth inning sending all six of the remaining Titan batters down in order to earn her first save of the season.
Game Two – Michigan State 20, Detroit Mercy 0 (5 inn.)
Freshman Jacey Schuler (6-10) went 3.1 innings in the circle allowing just one hit and striking out five in a scoreless outing. Sophomore Ava Mullen came out of the bullpen finishing out the fourth inning with a strikeout and senior Madison Taylor struck out two over the final inning of play. The Spartan pitching staff tossed a combined one-hit shutout.
Junior Hannah Greer was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a team-high four RBIs as 10 different Spartan batters recorded base knocks. A total of 14 players reached base including hits and walks. Sophomore Kendall Smiley and senior Jenae Wash notched multi-hit performances with two hits apiece and freshman Payton Conroy slugged her first home run of the season.
The Spartans tallied a total of eight extra-base hits in game two, including Conroy's homer. Schuler entered the game as a pinch-hitter late and tripled.
It was an eventful first inning for the Spartans who scored six runs on six hits. Hawley opened the scoring for MSU with an RBI double off the wall in center before coming in to score on a Titan throwing error on a stolen base by freshman Ava Coffinger. A pair of two-out doubles off the bats of Greer and Lee extended the MSU lead to 4-0. Conroy found the perfect time to tally her first hit of the season sending a ball over the fence in center field to drive in two more.

Runs continued to pour in for Michigan State in the second inning extending the lead to 11-0 on five runs and four hits in the frame. Doloszycki drove in two on a double down the left field line to start the scoring and Greer stayed perfect at the plate with a two-RBI single to center. With two outs, Wash doubled to center bringing Greer home.

Two-out scoring proved crucial for the Spartans in the third scoring one run on a successful double steal and another run on a Greer single to shallow left.
Michigan State batted around the order in the fourth inning for the second time in game two. Bases loaded walks by freshmen Sophie Holverstott and Ella Cunningham increased the MSU advantage to 15-0. The Spartans plated a pair on a Titan error to lead 17-0 before RBI singles off the bats of freshman Natalia Kenyatta and Wash pushed the score to 20-0.
