
Michigan State Opens Postseason Aiming for Big Ten Title

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team starts the postseason on Friday with the start of the Big Ten Championship as the Spartans aim for their fourth title in the last eight championships.
The three-round, 54-hole event will take place Friday-Sunday, April 18-20, at Bulle Rock Golf Course (par 72, 6,325 yards) in Havre de Grace, Md.
The Spartans tee off at 9:50 a.m., playing with Ohio State and UCLA.

SPARTANS AT THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Michigan State has won six of the last 13 Big Ten Championships and 14 in total, which is second-most in conference history. Under head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, MSU has eight titles (2001, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2021). MSU won five consecutive Big Ten titles from 1974-78, and also claimed a conference crown in 1982 in addition to the eight won by Slobodnik-Stoll. In the Big Ten record books, MSU is credited with nine Big Ten Championships, as the conference did not officially sanction women's sports until 1982.
Michigan State has finished in the top four at the Big Ten Championships in 16 of the last 19 years and 21 times under Slobodnik-Stoll.
Last year, the Spartans shot a 13-over par 297 in the final round and tied for sixth place at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh. MSU had entered the final round in eighth place but posted the best round of the tournament in the final round before moving to sixth place. Michigan State followed its Big Ten Championship finish by winning the NCAA Palm Beach Regional and advancing to the 2023 NCAA Championships.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
Michigan State closed out the regular season with a runner-up finish at the Buckeye Invitational on April 12-13. In five spring events, the Spartans finished among the top-five teams four time, including three finishes among the top-three teams and one team win.
Last week in Ohio, three Spartans finished among the top-10 overall and the Spartans had their best round of the weekend in Sunday's final round en route to a second place among 13 teams … The Spartans entered the final round in third place but fired a 3-under par 285 and finished as the tournament's runner-up at 13-over par 877 (295-297-285).
Senior Brooke Biermann led the Spartans, finishing in third place at 2-under par 214 (73-72-69). Biermann's final round included three birdies and 15 pars … Junior Taylor Kehoe carded a 1-over par 73 in Sunday's final round and finished in fifth place at 2-over par 218 (71-74-73) … Junior Paula Balanzategui had the team's second-best round of the day on Sunday with a 1-under par 71 and finished in ninth place at 6-over par 222 (74-77-71).
Biermann has been the leader for Michigan State this year, carrying a team-best 71.69 scoring average, with three top-5 finishes, three top-10s and six among the top-20 in nine events. Biermann, who has been the team's top finisher six times this year, has a 72.14 average in the spring with four top-20 finishes. Her season scoring average of 71.69 currently ranks as the fourth-best average for a single-season in program history.
Kehoe is second on the team in scoring average (72.33), with one top-five finish, two top-10s and four among the top-20 overall. A transfer from Alabama, Kehoe has had 95.2 percent of her rounds count toward the team total (20-of-21) rounds and had her best finish of the season last week, placing fifth at the Buckeye Invitational. Her 72.33 scoring average currently ranks as the seventh-best single season average in program history.
Senior Katie Lu is third on the team in scoring average at 72.84, with one top-five finish, one top-10 and four among the top-20 in nine events. Lu's best finish this year was a tie for fifth place at 1-under par 145 in the rain-shortened Valspar Augusta Invitational on March 15-16.
Biermann and Lu enter the postseason with career scoring averages at Michigan State that rank among the top-five in program history. Biermann is third all-time with a 72.99 scoring average, while Lu ranks fourth all-time at 73.38.
The MSU lineup this weekend also includes Balanzategui and sophomore Ana Sofia Murcia. Murcia is fourth on the team with a 74.34 scoring average, including a 74.29 mark in five spring events. Her best finish this year was a tie for 18th place at the Valspar Augusta Invitational at 6-over par 150. A junior, Balanzategui is fifth on the team with a 75.00 scoring average, including a 72.50 average in the spring that is the second-best on the squad. Freshman Catalina Monroy is sixth on the team with a 75.25 average and has two top-20 finishes.

Bulle Rock will host the Big Ten Championship for the second-straight year, including the 2025 edition with 18 teams. Named for the first thoroughbred racehorse brought to North America in the early 18th century, Bulle Rock has consistently been ranked as Maryland's No. 1 public golf course since opening in 1998. The acclaimed Pete Dye design winds through 235 acres near the intersection of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Bulle Rock hosted five consecutive LPGA Championships (now known as the Women's PGA Championship) from 2005-09, including Annika Sorenstam's third consecutive victory in 2005 by three strokes over 15-year old amateur Michelle Wie.
