Softball Defeated in Pitchers' Duel

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Neither offense got going on Friday afternoon as Michigan State softball dropped a tightly contested 3-1 series opener to Iowa at Secchia Stadium. Both sides battled rainy conditions late in the game after play was briefly suspended.

MSU moves to 14-26 (4-13 B1G) while Iowa improves to 30-16 (11-6). The Spartans continue the final home series of the season on Saturday hosting a 1:00 p.m. game against the Hawkeyes.

Freshman Carsyn Cassady (3-3) went 3.0 innings in the circle allowing just three hits and striking out one, but the Hawkeyes took advantage of three walks to score three runs. Sophomore Ava Mullen and senior Madison Taylor combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, with Taylor allowing no hits and striking out one in a pair of shutout frames.

Senior Collette Allen drove in the lone Spartan run of the game on a second inning pinch hit double. Allen later walked as the only player to reach base twice for the home team. Juniors Hannah Hawley and Kaelin Cash both doubled for MSU late in the game.

Allen and the Spartans struck first in the bottom of the second following a lead-off infield single by sophomore Hannah Greer. Allen's double to right center field drove in Greer from third after she was moved over by sophomore Kendall Smiley's sacrifice bunt.

Iowa knotted the game up at 1-1 in the third on a two-out double to left field. A fourth inning two-run home run off the bat of Hannah Lindsay provided the Hawkeyes with a 3-1 advantage.

Michigan State put a pair of runners on base in each of the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to take advantage.

Spartans turn two to end the top of the sixth and strand two Hawkeye runners!
