No. 58 MSU Women’s Tennis Topped At Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 58 Michigan State women's tennis fell to the Indiana Hoosiers in a 4-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon, closing out their Indiana roadster.

The Spartans now slide to a 4-6 Big Ten Conference record, while holding a 12-9 overall record. Sunday was the first time that the ranked Spartans were upset by their opponent.

This marks the Hoosiers' second conference win of the season, now earning themselves a 2-7 Big Ten record, while maintaining an 8-11 overall record.

Play kicked off with Indiana taking the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles against the Spartan duos of freshman Ellie Blackford/senior Liisa Vehvilainen at No. 1 and freshman Amara Brahmbhatt/junior Matilde Morais at No. 3.

With singles matches approaching, the Green & White knew they would have to work tirelessly for a victory.

Blackford gave the Spartans some hope, evening the score at No. 2 singles against Marina Fuduric, 6-3, 6-3.

Indiana did not waiver, following MSU's victory with three more singles wins.

First to fall was Brahmbhatt at No. 3 singles, who fell in her first set in a tie-break of 7-6 and then could not rebound, and dropped her second set, 6-3.

Following in suit was Vehvilainen at No. 1 singles, who dropped her match similarly to Brahmbhatt, falling in her first set in a tie-break of 7-6 and then unable to regain the match in her favor, 6-1.

Notching the win for the Hoosiers was Nicole Sifuentes at No. 5 singles against junior Issey Purser, who put up a valiant effort against her opponent, ultimately dropping her match in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.

With the match clinched, the remaining singles matches went unfinished.

The Spartans return home next weekend for a set of matches against Big Ten foes, Washington on Saturday, April 12 and Oregon on Sunday, April 13 both at 12 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
