Spartans topped in midweek match-up.
The match-up between MSU and CMU was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but was postponed until Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans scored early with four runs in the first for an early 4-0 lead. However, MSU was held to one run the rest of the way with a run in the fourth, as the Chippewas plated three in the third, one in the fourth then one in the sixth before the go-ahead run in the seventh. Michigan State's bats were stymied by CMU pitchers, limiting the Spartans to just five hits, including three after the first inning.
MSU had four errors in the game, while CMU had two miscues. The Spartans left four runners on base, while the Chippewas stranded 10.
"We didn't take care of any details, whatsoever. We got five hits today, we made four errors, allowed five unearned runs, so it's not that hard to figure out why we lost today," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We don't catch a fly ball in right, we don't catch a fly ball in left, we have an opportunity to go first-to-third in a big spot and we don't do it. The hitting approach was okay at the beginning and then we completely lost it, and that's how you lose games. It's nothing new, I mean, it continues to happen over-and-over again. We continue to address it, and we continue to see a lot of the same results. So obviously, I need to make some other decisions and put some different guys in the position to be successful, because the guys that are doing that right now are not having a whole lot of success."
MSU is now 17-14 overall on the season, while CMU moves to a palindromic 12-21.
The Spartans bolted out of the gates with four runs on two hits and took advantage of two CMU errors. MSU continued its trend of scoring in the first inning, as the Spartans have now scored 40 of their 198 total runs in the first inning, for 20 percent of their scoring, in the opening inning, having scoring in the first inning in 13 of the 31 games.
The Chippewas countered with three runs in the third and another in the visitor's fourth to tie the score at 4-all.
It wasn't tied for long, as the Spartans scored a run in the home half of the fourth on a solo home run by sophomore outfielder Parker Picot off the scoreboard in left for a 5-4 lead. CMU scored a run in the top of the sixth to level the score at 5-5, before plating another run in the seventh that was the go-ahead and winning run in the game.
MSU had five hits in the game, as junior infielder Randy Seymour was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior infielder Sam Busch, sophomore infielder and Picot were all 1-for-4. McKay and Picot knocked in an RBI and scored a run, while Busch touched home once. Senior outfielder Nick Williams and senior catcher Noah Bright had an RBI apiece each with a sacrifice fly in the first frame, sandwiched around Seymour's RBI single. Senior outfielder JT Sokolove scored a run after leading off with a walk to open the game, scoring on McKay's RBI double. Graduate designated hitter Caleb Berry scored a run after reaching on an error.
Six different Spartan pitchers took the mound, with freshman starter Aidan Donovan going 2.2 IP, scattering three runs on three hits and two strikeouts. Sophomore reliever Gannon Grundman went 1.1 IP with one hit and one run, striking out one, senior reliever Dominic Pianto went 2.0 IP with one hit and one run, allowing MSU's lone walk. Sophomore Garrett Brewer went 1.0 IP with two hits and two strikeouts, with one earned run, for the lone earned run allowed by MSU on the day, before ending the seventh with a strikeout looking.
Sophomore Logan Pikur yielded one hit in 1.0 IP, with two big putouts in the eighth with a runner on third after only one out, snaring a hotshot comebacker for out number two, then chalking up a strikeout to end the frame and strand the runner at third. Graduate Tyler Horvath pitched the ninth, working around a pair of one-out singles by getting a flyout and a fielder's choice to end the frame.
Sokolove led off the game with a walk and McKay followed by roping a double to the left-center gap and Sokolove scampered around to score the first run of the day. Berry and Busch then both reached on back-to-back CMU errors to load the bases. N.Williams followed and laced a line drive to center, that Chippewa center fielder Zach Knowlton made a diving catch on, allowing McKay to score on the sac fly. Seymour then socked a single to right center to driving in Berry, and Bright flew out to right with a sac fly to plate Busch for the Spartans' early 4-0 lead.
The Chippewas got on the board in the third with a three-run home run by Cayden Smith. CMU then scored a run in the fourth on an RBI double, a run in the sixth on an MSU fielding error, before taking the lead in the seventh on an RBI single.
