EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State hockey rising sophomore Shane Vansaghi was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers with the 16th pick in the second round (48th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft on Saturday afternoon.
Vansaghi's selection brings MSU's all-time draft total to 132 with 19 second round selections. He joins incoming freshman Ryker Lee who was selected in the first round by the Nashville Predators on Friday night.
As a freshman at MSU in 2024-25, Vansaghi skated in all 37 games as the sixth-youngest player in college hockey. The St. Louis, Mo. native delivered six goals and 10 assists for MSU including two power-play goals. Vansaghi earned MSU's Outstanding Rookie Award as the only freshman to appear in all 37 games last season. He ranked No. 33 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of draft eligible North American skaters.
Vansaghi is the eighth Spartan to be selected by Philadelphia all-time and the first since 2006, joining Mike Ratchuk, Steve Beadle, Pat Murray, Jeff Harding, Bruce Rendall, Paul Klasinski and Norm Barnes. At the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, Philadelphia signed former Spartan, Karsen Dorwart, to an entry-level contract.
