EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State hockey junior Trey Augustine and senior Matt Basgall have been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Teams. Augustine is a first team selection, marking the program's first first-teamer since Jeff Lerg in 2009. Basgall was named to the third team. It's the first time Michigan State hockey has received multiple CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America honors in the same season.
Augustine and Basgall were chosen from an expansive list of nominees across 10 NCAA men's sports in the CSC At-Large division. Additional sports included men's fencing, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
A finance major, Augustine posted a 3.88 grade point average in 2024-25. Augustine adds First Team Academic All-America honors to a laundry list of accolades from this past season that already included First Team American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American, Richter Award Finalist, AAU Sullivan Award Finalist, Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, First Team All-B1G and B1G All-Tournament Team.
Augustine completed his sophomore season tallying a 2.08 goals against average and a .924 save percentage, along with a 19-7-4 record and three shutouts. He improved upon his freshman season numbers by nearly a full goal (2.97 GAA in 2023-24). In addition to his NCAA schedule, Augustine captured a gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship and became the all-time leader in goaltending wins in that tournament for Team USA with 12.
A kinesiology major, Basgall posted a 3.96 grade point average in 2024-25. Basgall earned Second Team AHCA All-America honors as a junior along with being a First Team All-B1G selection. He was a finalist for the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award.
The team's top scoring defenseman, Basgall finished the season with a career-high six goals, 20 assists and 26 points. Basgall contributed 45 blocked shots and committed just four minor penalties in 37 games played. Alongside Augustine, Basgall helped anchor the MSU defense that averaged 2.08 goals against per game, which led the Big Ten and ranked sixth nationally.
