EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale announced team captains for the 2025-26 season on Monday. Senior Matt Basgall will be the 80th Spartan to wear the "C", after serving as an alternate captain last season. Senior Charlie Stramel, senior Tiernan Shoudy and junior Patrick Geary will serve as alternate captains.
Basgall enters his senior campaign coming off a junior season that saw him earn second team AHCA All-America honors and first team All-Big Ten honors. He was a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year finalist and picked up CSC Academic All-District, AHCA/Krampade All-American Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the classroom. Basgall posted career-bests in goals (6), assists (20) and points (26) along with finishing +9 with 45 blocked shots.
Shoudy served as an alternate captain in 2024-25 and will carry that designation over into his senior season. A CSC Academic All-District and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Shoudy skated in all 37 games as a junior recording career-bests in goals (8) and points (17) while finishing the season +11 and playing a key role on the penalty kill. His face-off winning percentage of .536 was best among MSU's centers.
Stramel and Geary will each wear the "A" for Michigan State for the first time this season.
A first-round selection by the Minnesota Wild in the 2023 NHL Draft, Stramel played on the top line and skated in all 37 games during his first season as a Spartan in 2024-25. Stramel tallied nine goals and 18 assists, ranking third on the team in points with 27. He finished the season +13 with four game-winning goals and assisted on Isaac Howard's game-winner in double overtime of the Big Ten Championship game. Geary, a sixth-round selection by his hometown Buffalo Sabres in the 2024 NHL Draft, enters his junior season in 2025-26. He posted one goal, six assists (seven points) and 26 blocked shots on Michigan State's top defensive pairing.
