Field Hockey Falls at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Michigan State field hockey fell in its final game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, 4-0, to Bucknell at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium.
MSU moves to 3-6 overall and returns to action on Friday, October 3 host conference opponent Rutgers at Ralph Young Field at 3:00 p.m. It'll be the first home appearance by the Spartans in nearly a month.
Bucknell owned a 20-11 advantage in shots and a 14-5 edge in shots on goal while attempting two more penalty corners than the Spartans (6-4).
Sophomore Mora Cavazza led the Michigan State offense with two shots on goal (three total shots), while graduates Maddie Lawlor and Tatum Johnson, and junior Katelyn Dulin had one shot on goal each.
Junior goalkeeper Lyra Gavino made nine saves on 13 shots faced seeing a majority of the action on Sunday. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Herbert entered mid-way through the fourth tallying on save on the only shot she saw.
Michigan State drew three of its four penalty corners in the first period, with Johnson's shot on goal in the 11th minute being saved by the Bison goaltender. Bucknell capitalized on its first goal of the afternoon late in the first in the 13th minute.
Gavino kept the Spartan deficit at 1-0 with a great save in the 20th minute of regulation. Lawlor had two shots in the second, with her potential game-tying shot on goal in the 28th minute was kicked away by Bucknell before the end of the half.
Three early second half shots led to the Bison increasing their lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute. Later in the third, a Bucknell penalty corner led to a third goal in the 40th minute. Cavazza got a great look on goal in the 42nd minute, pulling the Bison goalkeeper out of net, but the Bison defense made a defensive save to prevent the Cavazza goal. Michigan State's defense turned away five more Bucknell shots before the end of the third.
In the fourth period, Cavazza had a back handed shot on goal that was punched away by the Bison goalkeeper, but on the ensuing possession for Bucknell, the Bison capitalized for on a player-up situation for their fourth goal of the game.
MSU looked to get on the board late with a penalty corner in the 50th minute, but a shot by sophomore Caro Schafer was blocked and the following shot by Dulin was saved. Junior Brynn Shaffer looked to capitalize on the rebound but her shot went wide of goal. Johnson had a shot hit the post in the 56th minute.
