Spartans to Host Bellarmine in Home Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey is set to host the Bellarmine Knights on Friday, September 5th, with pass back being set for 3 p.m. Friday's home opener will be streamed live on B1G +.
SERIES HISTORY
MSU is 2-0 all-time against Bellarmine, winning last season's neutral site matchup by a score of 4-2. Friday's game will be the second time in the series history that Bellarmine travels to East Lansing. Bellarmine last traveled to East Lansing in 2022 when the Spartans notched a victory by a score of 3-1.
ABOUT BELLARMINE
The Knights come to town 0-2 seeking their first win under new head coach Toby Platt. Bellarmine is coming off a 4-13 season in 2024.
Alicia Hudson is the Knights most seasoned veteran starting in a team-high 53 career games and all 17 games for Bellarmine last season. Hudson has played 2,950 career minutes for the Knights and leads the team this season in shots on goal (2) and is tied for the team-high in assists (1). Hudson is the older sister of teammate, Dominique Hudson.
Kailey Workman returns in goal for the Knights, following a junior season in which she started all 17 games and tallied a career high in saves (120), averaging out to 7.06 saves per game which was the sixth-most single season saves in program history. Workman recorded a .719 save percentage to rank top three in the Mid-American Conference.
PREVIOUSLY FOR THE SPARTANS
Michigan State opened its season last Friday against Louisville, falling by a score of 6-1. Michigan State trailed 4-0 at halftime but started to find its offensive footing in the second half when Caro Schafer scored off a penalty corner thanks to an assist from Serena Mailhe. MSU had five of its six total shots in the second half.
In game two of the weekend MSU quickly bounced back with an impressive 5-0 shutout victory over Ohio on Saturday. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Herbert recorded her second career victory in net and combined for the shutout with junior Lyra Gavino.
Five different Spartans scored against the Bobcats, and three of the five scorers notched their first collegiate goals (Mora Cavazza, Katelyn Dulin and Sarah Connolly).
UP NEXT
The Spartans return to competition next Friday, traveling to Burlington, Vermont to face the Vermont Catamounts on September 12 at 2 p.m. Following the matchup against Vermont, MSU remains in Burlington to take on the Merrimack Warriors at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 13. Friday's contest will be live streamed on AmericaEast.tv.
