MSU Women’s Tennis Starts Spring Season With Solid Showing At TCU

Purser leads a trio of Spartans with an undefeated weekend.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Michigan State women's tennis had three Spartans travel to Fort Worth, Texas over the weekend to compete in the TCU JAE Foundation Battle for the Boot Spring Kickoff on Friday and Saturday, and the trio of Spartans had a solid showing to start off the spring season.
MSU kicked off action on Friday with a round of doubles and singles matches. The senior/redshirt-junior duo of Sarah Fazlagic/Oriana Parkins-Godwin. The Spartan pair competed against Northern Texas's Carolina Laydner/Ujin Batsukh, where the Green & White fell in a 6-1 deficit.
Following was a round of singles matches, where the Spartans struggled to find their footing. Parkins-Godwin competed against UNT's Lou Chalard where she ultimately was defeated, 6-1, 6-1.
Fazlagic followed suit, dropping her match against Pia Petelinsek of UNT, 6–2, 6-1.
Senior Issey Purser was the only Spartan to claim victory against her UNT opponent, Lilly Schultz, 6-4, 7-5.
Saturday's action commenced with another round of doubles where Purser and Parkins-Godwin teamed up against UNT's Pia Petelinsek/Giulianna Ciangherotti and were victorious, 6-2.
Parkins-Godwin suffered another loss against Petelinsek, going 3-6, 6-4, 8-10.
Purser had another successful match where she versed Batsukh 6-4, 6-0, officially confirming an undefeated weekend for herself.
Fazlagic finished last against Ciangherotti, losing 6-1, 6-1 in her final match of the tournament.
This weekend was the first half of back-to-back weekends in Texas for the Spartans, as the complete team will open up team dual action next weekend in the ITA Kickoff in College Station, Texas, opening against host, No. 2 Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan. 24, and then playing either Arizona State or TCU on Sunday, Jan. 25.
