Women’s Tennis Opens Dual Season With Undefeated Weekend

Spartans women’s tennis team defeated Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan in Sunday's doubleheader.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State women's tennis opened their spring dual-match season with sweeping victories against both Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan on Sunday with a pair of 4-0 Victories for MSU.
The Spartans played a doubleheader on Sunday to begin their five-match homestand. The Western Michigan Broncos were the Green & White's first foe opening on Sunday morning, and the Spartans fought hard to clinch their first win of the season.
MSU locked down the doubles point with the pairings of sophomore Ellie Blackford/senior Matilde Morais and sophomore Nina Plihal/senior Issey Purser winning their doubles matches.
First to finish was the pairing of senior Sarah Fazlagic/redshirt junior Oriana Parkins-Godwin, where the Spartan duo dropped their match against WMU's Julia Frazier/Sienna Osborne 6-1.
The Spartans had to battle back, and Blackford/Morais delivered against WMU's Lola Glantz/Marielou Baudouin, claiming a 6-2 victory.
Plihal/Purser fought against Audrey Smitek/Frida Weijerman and were victorious 6-3, securing the doubles point in the Spartans' favor.
Redshirt junior Hanna Tsitavets had a dominant victory against Bronco Marielou Baudouin, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Blackford followed suit, securing a win against Frida Weijerman 6-3, 6-1.
Securing the match was senior Issey Purser, who took her match in a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Julia Frazier, slating the Spartans first official win of the season.
The rest of the singles matches went unfinished.
The Green & White had their second match of the day against the Eastern Michigan Eagles Sunday afternoon.
Eastern Michigan was quick to win the first doubles match, with Iva Daneva/Roberta Mendez Carreno defeating the Fazlagic/Parkins-Godwin tandem in a quick 6-1 victory.
With the Eagles clinching one doubles match, it was left to doubles No. 1 and No. 2 to guarantee the doubles point in the Spartans favor.
Blackford/Morais continued their doubles reign, defeating Lara Diaz Zayas/Cylova Zuleyka 6-1.
The Plihal/Purser duo notched the doubles point for the Spartans, winning 6-3 against Matilde Parreira/Sabrina Tolstova, also solidifying their undefeated status for the day.
Parkins-Godwin was first to add another point to the Spartans total, winning in straight sets against Iva Daneva, 6-4, 6-0.
Purser remained undefeated for the remainder of the match, also securing a point in straight sets versus Matilde Parreira, 6-2, 6-2.
Clinching the match was Blackford who moved up to No. 1 singles to face Cylova Zuleyka 6-3, 6-0.
The Spartans remained undefeated after their first weekend competing in the spring dual match season.
The Green & White return to the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 6 to face Xavier Musketeers at 4:30 p.m.
Following their match against Xavier, the Spartans will host another doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 8 to face Gonzaga at 10 a.m. and Ball State at 2 p.m.
