NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State is 12-7 all-time against the USNTDP including a 9-6 mark in East Lansing. MSU has won two straight in the last two seasons with wins by scores of 5-2 and 6-3.
• Several current Spartans have faced off against MSU as members of the USNTDP, including Austin Baker, Shane Vansaghi and Trey Augustine.
• Michigan State is ranked No. 3 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 3 in the USA Hockey poll for the fifth straight week. MSU has not been ranked lower than No. 4 in either poll this season.
• MSU is coming off its second straight Great Lakes Invitational championship after defeating Ferris State (5-2) and Michigan Tech (4-1) last weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich. It's Michigan State's 14th title at the GLI all-time and the first time MSU has gone back-to-back since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
• Senior Charlie Stramel was named Tournament MVP alongside junior Trey Augustine, junior Patrick Geary and freshman Anthony Romani who were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Stramel was named the Big Ten's First Star of the Week, while Augustine was Second Star of the Week and Romani was Third Star of the Week. It's the first time a Big Ten team swept all three weekly stars since 2022 when Ohio State did it on 12/20.
• Stramel posted five points on the weekend (4-1-5) while Romani tallied four points (2-2-4). Augustine posted a .946 save percentage stopping 53-of-56 shots for a 1.50 goals against average.
• The Spartans are without freshman forward Porter Martone (Canada), freshman forward Ryker Lee (USA), freshman forward Eric Nilson (Sweden) and sophomore forward Shane Vansaghi (USA) who are participating in the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championships.
• Martone was named captain of Team Canada, previously captaining Canada to gold at the 2024 U18 World Championship.
• Under head coach Adam Nightingale, Michigan State has had 8 active players play at World Juniors, in addition to several Spartans that played at World Juniors prior to joining MSU. Future Spartan, defenseman Chase Reid, will also play for Team USA this year. Trey Augustine (USA), Isaac Howard (USA), Tommi Mannisto (Finland) and Maxim Strbak (Slovakia) played at World Juniors while rostered at Michigan State in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Red Savage (USA) and Charlie Stramel (USA) played at World Juniors prior to their arrival in East Lansing.
• Michigan State's top line of Daniel Russell - Charlie Stramel - Porter Martone has recorded 60 points this season on 25 goals and 35 assists. They are a combined +55 with Stramel leading with a +21 to Russell's +19 and Martone's +15.
• Stramel is #3 nationally in face-off wins (222), #29 in assists per game (0.72) and #16 in points per game (1.28).
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine is among the best in the country ranking #1 in shutouts (3), #4 in goals against average (1.69) and #2 in save percentage (.938). Augustine leads the Big Ten in all three categories.Â
• Michigan State ranks #2 nationally in scoring defense (1.72), #13 in scoring offense (3.50) and #4 in scoring margin (+1.78). MSU leads the Big Ten in scoring defense and is third in scoring offense.
