Blair's 21 Points Helps No. 13 MSU Conquer Trojans, 74-68

The Spartans were led by four players in double figures.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Behind a 21-point performance from redshirt-sophomore guard Kennedy Blair, the No. 13/15 Spartan women's basketball team held off the tenacious USC Trojans, 74-68 on Thursday night at the Breslin Center on Breslin Boom Night.
Michigan State improves to 18-2 overall and 7-2 in Big Ten action. USC falls to 11-8 overall 3-5 in Big Ten play.

The Spartans had four players in double figures led by Blair's fourth 20-point game of the season. She recorded 21 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals, which was a new career high. Senior forward Grace VanSlooten was just shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds to go along with a team-high three assists. Junior guard Rashunda Jones added 16, while sophomore Inés Sotelo returned to form with 12 points and seven rebounds, tying her season-highs for both points and boards.
USC was led by 23 points from Kara Dunn.
The Spartans defense forced 24 Trojan turnovers, which was a season high for USC. MSU also had 14 steals led by a career-hgih five swipes from Blair.
Michigan State jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after a 3-pointer by Sotelo with under seven minutes left in the first period. A VanSlooten layup gave MSU its first double-digit lead at 18-8. USC used a 6-0 run to trim the Spartan lead to 22-14, the streak was ended by a pair of Jones free throws. MSU was on top after the first 10 minutes 24-17. VanSlooten, Jones and Sotelo all had six points in the first period.
In the second quarter, the Trojans went on a 6-0 run to make it a 26-25 Spartan advantage, leading to an MSU timeout at the 7:55 mark. Londynn Jones put USC on top 35-34 with a 3-pointer as the Spartan offense stalled in the second quarter. MSU was 1-for-12 from the field to end the period, as USC led at the half 37-36. Sotelo and VanSlooten shared the bulk of the scoring with 10 points each.
The teams exchanged leads for much of the third period. The Spartans used a 6-0 run to take a 53-49 lead with under a minute remaining in the period. The MSU defense was tough, forcing six turnovers in the final 3:16.Neither team took bigger than a four-point lead in the tightly contests quarter. A Jones layup with 41 seconds left gave MSU the 53-49 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartans used an 8-0 run over 1:50 to take their first double-digit lead since the first quarter, 64-52. The Trojans responded with a 10-0 run in 42 seconds to make it just a 66-64 MSU lead with four minutes remaining. An old-fashioned three by Blair put MSU back on top by five at 69-64 with 1:57 left. The home team made their free throws down the stretch to seal the Victory for MSU.
The Spartans hit to the road to take on Purdue on Thursday, Jan. 29. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

• No. 13/15 Michigan State improved to 18-2 overall on the season, which is the Spartans' best record in program history since 2010-22, when MSU was also 18-2 through the first 20 games of the season.
• MSU also improved to 7-2 in B1G action, which is also the top conference ledgers since 1996-97 when MSU was 8-2 through 10 league games.
