COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Michigan State field hockey faced a tough conference test away from home on Friday afternoon, falling 4-0 to No. 1-ranked Maryland.

With the setback, MSU moves to 5-9 overall and 0-6 in Big Ten play, while the Terrapins remain unbeaten at 14-0 (5-0 B1G).

Maryland held a 27-3 advantage in total shots, a 13-2 edge in shots on goal, and earned 11 penalty corners to Michigan State's two.

The Spartans generated three shots on the evening, led by on-target efforts from senior back Serena Mailhe and redshirt sophomore forward Nina Angeli. Junior goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger delivered a resilient complete-game effort in cage for Michigan State, turning aside a career-high tying nine saves across 60 minutes of action while facing 27 total shots.

The Spartans withstood early offensive pressure from the Terrapins in the opening frame, backed by a pair of stops from Munoz de Verger. MSU created its first scoring chance in the sixth minute when junior midfielder Lilian Knorr inserted a penalty corner to set up an on-target strike from Mailhe that was saved to keep the game scoreless after 15 minutes.

Maryland broke the deadlock in the second quarter, finding the back of the cage in the 21st minute on an unassisted strike before doubling the lead in the 25th minute off a feed inside the circle. Michigan State answered with a push in the 28th minute, earning an inserted corner from Knorr that resulted in Maudlin's shot flying just wide.

The Terrapins extended their advantage to 3-0 in the 38th minute with an unassisted marker midway through the third period. Munoz de Verger kept the deficit within reach throughout the frame, tallying saves on back-to-back chances following a corner sequence.

Maryland capped the scoring in the 52nd minute by capitalizing off a penalty corner set piece to push the lead to 4-0. Michigan State continued to press forward in the fourth quarter, forcing a save in the 53rd minute on an on-frame shot from Angeli, while Munoz de Verger recorded three additional saves down the final stretch to halt any further scoring.
