Women’s Tennis Ready To Host Three-Match Weekend

The Spartans face Xavier, Gonzaga and Ball State in a set of home matches.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis is set to host three matches over the weekend at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, welcoming Xavier on Friday, Feb 6 at 4 p.m. and Gonzaga and Ball State on Sunday, Feb. 8 in another doubleheader. The Spartans' match against Gonzaga begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, and the match versus Ball State follows at 2 p.m.
Additionally, Gonzaga and Xavier will take the court on Saturday in a neutral court match at 1 p.m.
Friday's match is MSU's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Sunday is MSU's Youth and Family Day, with several activities on hand for fans, including a coloring station and face tattoos available.

The Green & White had a successful opening weekend, defeating Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan in a Sunday doubleheader.
Notably, the Spartans took down both opponents with sweeping wins, taking down an undefeated 6-0 Eastern Michigan team and a 3-1 Western Michigan coming into last weekend.
Sophomore Amara Brahmbhatt remained in the ITA singles rankings after the opening matches, coming in with a ranking of 116.
The sophomore/senior duo of Ellie Blackford/Matilde Morais also remained in the polls after going undefeated in doubles matches and only allowing three total points against them. ITA ranked the tandem at 88 after a successful weekend.
Series History vs. Xavier
Since the 2015-16 season, the Spartans and the Musketeers have faced off during the dual match season, with the Spartans holding a dominating 8-1 record.
During the 2024-25 season, the Green & White opened their home season against Xavier, winning in a narrow 4-3 victory at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The only loss for MSU came during the 2022-23 season, where, despite winning the doubles point, the Spartans were overtaken during singles matches.
MSU looks to uphold its fierce competition with the Musketeers and maintain the current win streak.
Scouting Xavier
Xavier currently holds a 0-1 record after dropping their season opener against Notre Dame, 6-1, only earning one point from singles play.
Previously, the Musketeers were supposed to attend the ITA Kickoff to face Illinois and Purdue, in Chicago, but due to weather conditions, the team was unable to travel.
With this, Xavier looks to put up a heavy contention, looking for the first win of their season.
Series History vs. Gonzaga
The Bulldogs and the Spartans first faced off during the 2008-09 season, where the Green & White picked up a win in neutral territory.
Following, during the 2019-20 season, the Spartans slated yet another win at home in East Lansing, sweeping the Bulldogs in a 4-0 victory.
The 2024-25 season was the first time the two teams met since the 2019-20 season, and the match served as both teams' season opener, as MSU traveled to Spokane, Wash., for the match-up with the Bulldogs.
While the Spartans fought hard, they were defeated in a 5-2 deficit, with sophomore Ellie Blackford putting up one of the only points for MSU.
Overall, the Green & White hold a 2-1 record against Gonzaga, and hope to reclaim their victory against the team.
Scouting Gonzaga
Gonzaga travels to East Lansing undefeated, earning a 3-0 opening season record. So far, the Bulldogs have swept each of their opponents.
Prior to facing the Spartans, the Bulldogs will battle Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. in a neutral territory match at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs look to stay undefeated and secure their first win against the Spartans in their home territory.
Series History vs. Ball State
Michigan State holds a strong record against the Ball State Cardinals, slating a 6-1 record since their first meeting during the 2006-07 season.
For two years, the Spartans have hosted the Cardinals in doubleheaders, claiming two consecutive victories against their foes. During the previous season, MSU faced Ball State first, only allowing one point against them.
The only loss for the Green & White came during the 2013-14 season, where, despite winning the doubles point, the Cardinals were able to come back during singles matches and defeat them 4-3.
Scouting Ball State
BSU had a difficult start to their season, falling to Notre Dame in a 7-0 sweep in South Bend, Ind.
Following their loss against the Fighting Irish, Ball State faced Navy in a neutral territory match and claimed their first win of the season, a 6-1 victory.
Prior to facing the Spartans, the Cardinals will battle the Butler Bulldogs on their home cour on Friday evening before heading to East Lansing.
