EAST LANSING, Mich. – For the third consecutive season, Michigan State hockey junior goaltender Trey Augustine has been named a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, presented annually to the top goaltender in NCAA men's Division I hockey. Augustine is the only three-time semifinalist this season and is one of four repeat semifinalists from last season.
Semifinalists are chosen by a panel of 25 voters from across the hockey community, including coaches from each conference, members of the national media, professional scouts and representatives of USA Hockey.
A Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominee, Augustine is a three-time Big Ten Star of the Week this season, earning the conference's First Star on two occasions. Augustine was named a Preseason First Team All-Big Ten selection after earning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year honors in 2024-25.
Augustine's .932 save percentage ranks fourth nationally and his 1.96 goals against average is seventh. Among the semifinalists those numbers rank second (Sv%) and fourth (GAA). Augustine has posted a 20-6-0 record in goal, with 10 of his victories coming against Top 5-ranked opponents. He's faced more ranked opponents this season (14) than every goaltender slotted above him in season save percentage and goals against average. Augustine is 16-6-2 against Top 5 opponents in his career.
The Spartans rank No. 2 nationally in scoring defense (1.96 goals/game) thanks to Augustine's efforts. Michigan State has faced three of the Top 10 scoring offenses in the country (Michigan (#1 - 4.68 goals/game), Wisconsin (#4 - 3.79), Penn State (#10 - 3.58)) a total of 12 times with Augustine in goal this season, posting an 8-4-0 record alongside 2.41 goals against on average.
Augustine's 62 career victories to date ties Bob Essensa for eighth-most in program history. Among active DI goaltenders, Augustine ranks first in wins (62) and fourth in career save percentage (.922) among goaltenders with at least 1000 shots faced. His 91 career games played rank just seventh, with 12 fewer games played than the next winningest goaltender.
