MSU, Charlotte Combine For 29 Runs in Wild 16-13 49er Victory

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State dropped a wild game to host Charlotte, 16-13, in its second game of the day at the Queen City Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina. MSU drops to 6-3, while Charlotte moves to 8-2 on the season.

The two teams combined for 29 runs off 24 hits and each used four different pitchers in the regulation-length game-hig. MSU led off the game with a five-run top of the first, added three more in the fifth, and four in the sixth. The 49ers trailed 5-3 after the first but added four runs in the third, six in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. MSU stranded six runners, while Charlotte left three.Â
The Spartans were led by junior Payton Conroy, who rattled off three hits on the day. Sophie Holverstott made her first start of the season and went 1-for-3 with a grand slam (her first career homer). Three Charlotte players had two-hit days, with Jaylah Jarrell and Brelyn O'Hearn each contributed four RBI.Â

MSU will head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana next weekend to take part in the Purple and Gold Classic, hosted by No. 12/10 LSU.Â

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
- Payton Conroy went 3-for-4 with a double, a single, and two RBI. She led all players in base hits.
- Sophie Holverstott finished the game 1-for-3 with a game-high five RBI. She also threw out two attempted stolen bases in her first start this season behind the plate..
- Zoie Bernard was 2-5 with a double and a stolen base.
- Sydney Doloszycki (2) and Britain Beshears (3) drew a combined five walks and each scored two runs.
- Freshman Lyndsey Hooker came on as a pinch hitter and went 2-2, notched her first career hit, and had an RBI.

- Sophie Holverstott's first-inning grand slam was the first home run of her career. She also delivered a career-best five RBI in the game.
- Zoie Bernard had two hits, marking her third game with multiple hits this season.

SCORING RECAPS
- Zoie Bernard led off the game with a double, and Sydney Doloszycki and Britain Beshears both walked to load the bases. Sophia Grillo was hit by a pitch, which forced Bernard home from third. Sophie Holverstott homered to left center field to clear the bases, giving the Spartans a 5-0 lead in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, A leadoff double and a pair of MSU errors led to Charlotte's first run, then a bunt single and a double steal advanced two 49er runs home to make it 5-3. Â
- A single and two walks loaded the bases for Charlotte with no outs in the third. Consecutive batters were hit by a pitch and brought two Charlotte runs across to tie the game, and back-to-back sacrifice flies into left field plated two more Charlotte runs, giving the 49ers a 7-5 lead after three innings. Â
- Kendall Smiley led off the fourth inning with a double to left center field. Payton Conroy laid down a successful bunt single to move Smiley to third base, then Doloszycki reached on a fielder's choice up the middle, allowing Smiley to cross the plate for the Spartans to make it 7-6.
- Beshears walked with one out in the fifth inning, and Lyndsey Hooker delivered for MSU with a pinch-hit RBI single, bringing home Beshears. Hannah Greer singled and Holverstott walked, loading the bases for Payton Conroy; she doubled off the wall in center, bringing Greer and Hooker home, giving MSU a 9-7 lead. After MSU's three-run top of the frame, Charlotte retaliated with six runs off six hits in the bottom of the frame. Sophie Holverstott gunned down a runner at second on a stolen base attempt to end the inning.
- Doloszycki reached on an error to start off the sixth and was moved over to third by a single from Hannah Hawley.  Charlotte went to its bullpen, but Beshears walked to load the bases with no outs. Hooker delivered again with a single, bringing Doloszycki and Hawley home. Hannah Greer reached on a fielder's choice, and an error allowed Bashears and Hooker to score offto knot the game up at 13-13. Not to be outdone, the home team regained the lead with a three-run home half. Charlotte put two runners on (a walk and a bunt single), with the runners advancing into scoring position off a wild pitch. The 49ers pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly to right field, and another two runs off a two-run homer by Jarrell.
