MSU ties season-high runs in big win over EMU.
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning and didn't look back en route to a 13-5 Victory for MSU over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday at EMU's Oestrike Stadium.
The Spartans tied a season-high 13 runs on 12 hits, their second-most of the season, on the way to being victorious in their first game played in the state of Michigan. MSU snapped a six-game losing streak in moving to 4-11 on the season, while EMU suffered its sixth-straight loss in a row in sliding to 4-13.
Michigan State beat Eastern Michigan for the seventh-straight meeting, including winning 13 of the last 16 match-ups, moving to 103-61-1 all-time.Â
The Spartans were playing the Eagles in Ypsilanti for the first time since 2019. MSU improved to 19-6 vs. EMU under head coach Jake Boss Jr., who is now 20-7 in this series, as he was 1-1 vs. MSU during his one season at Eastern Michigan in 2008. MSU assistant coach/pitching coach Mark Van Ameyde was head coach at EMU from 2015-17.
Of Michigan State's 12 hits on Tuesday, eight of the nine Spartans in the lineup had hits, including one hit freshman designated hitter Isaiah Domey, who made his first start and registered his first collegiate hit. The sophomore duo of outfielder Isaac Sturgess and infielder Dayton Murphy had two hits apiece, along with senior outfielder Nick Williams. Senior infielder Randy Seymour only had one hit, but it was a big one, with a three-run HR. Junior infielder Ryan McKay and sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas each had a hit.Â
Broski knocked four RBI, on a pair of two-run hits, while Seymour had three RBI on his homer, while Murphy and Williams had two RBI apiece, and McKay added one ribbie.
Domey scored three runs, while Thomas, Murphy, Williams and Sturgess touched home twice, along with Seymour and McKay scoring once apiece.
Along with Seymour's homer, Williams had an inside-the-park home run after the EMU right fielder collided with the wall, while Murphy had a triple and Broski knocked a double. Both Murphy and Broski added a stolen base.
Eight MSU pitchers combined for eight strikeouts, while yielding five walks and only allowing five hits, highlighted by freshman reliever Bobby Crane earning his first collegiate win, going 2.0 IP with one strikeout and no hits or runs. Graduate JD Greeley started and went 1.0 IP, scattering three hits, two runs and one K. Junior Logan Pikur (1.0 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K), junior Josh Klug (1.0 IP, 3 R, 1 BB, 0 K), freshman Andrew Everson (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R), junior Ben Kochany (0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K), graduate Andrew Siler (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) and senior Nolan Higgins (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K) completed the work on the mound. Siler made a successful Spartan debut.
"It was a good day for everybody," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought we pitched it well. A lot of guys had opportunities to throw today and I thought we threw very well, and we played very, very good defense, which is always important. The bats broke out a little bit today offensively, which was much needed so it was a good day all around for our guys. I'm really happy for Bobby Crane getting his first collegiate win today and for Isaiah Domey getting his first collegiate hit today. We had a couple home runs, and Adam Broski had a big day at the plate and Dayton Murphy had a big day. So again, it was a good day for all of us."
The Spartans jumped on top early, scoring in their first at bat, as Sturgess and McKay knocked singles, then Murphy got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and two batters later, Broski knocked a single to drive in both Sturgess and McKay for a 2-0 lead.
Michigan State broke the game open with a five-spot in the second, as Domey started the rally with a leadoff single up the middle for his first collegiate hit. Thomas then laid down a gem of a bunt down the third-base line. Two batters later, Sturgess drew a walk to fill the bases full of Spartans. McKay then grounded out to the pitcher, but drove Domey in. Murphy then followed with a triple to right center to plate Thomas and Sturgess. Williams was up next and he sent a high fly ball back to the wall in right, where EMU right fielder Kriss Sydlowski leapt and collided with the wall, appearing to make the catch, but the ball came loose on the collision and Williams darted around the bases for the inside-the-park home run. After medical personnel checked on Sydlowski, umpires reviewed the play and confirmed no catch and the home run for Williams, putting MSU ahead 7-0.
EMU got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second to close to 7-2, but MSU plated three in the top of the third. Again Domey was the catalyst, drawing a one-out walk and Thomas followed with a walk of his own. The Eagles made a pitching change, bringing in Jack Angus and Seymour rudely welcomed Angus to the game by belting the first pitch from Angus for a three-run home run to right center and a 10-2 Spartan advantage.
The Eagles plated three in the fifth to get within 10-5, but that would be the closest MSU would allow EMU to get, as the Spartans scored two runs in the sixth. Murphy sparked the rally with a one-out single up the middle, then stole second. Williams drew a walk, forcing another Eastern Michigan pitching change, bringing Cal Rutherford to the mound.
Similar to Seymour, Broski also gave a rude welcome to the game, smacking a double down the left field line, driving in Murphy and Williams and putting MSU ahead, 12-5, in the sixth.
That remained the score until the ninth, when Domey again ignited the Spartan rally, drawing a one-out walk. Thomas laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Domey to second. Seymour was up next, reaching on an error by EMU, allowing Domey to score with the Spartans' 13th and final run of the game.
Higgins worked a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the Victory for MSU.
