East Lansing, Mich. – No. 7 UCLA was able to hold off visiting Michigan State on Saturday in a wild, 18-10 victory for the Bruins in five innings. The Spartans scored all 10 runs in the final three innings and are now 13-12 (0-2 Big Ten). UCLA improves to 24-3 and remains perfect in Big Ten play at 5-0. Alex Starr, Natalie Lo

HOW THINGS HAPPENED
- The game started on a promising note, with a leadoff triple by Zoie Bernard, and with two out, Sophia Grillo was hit by a pitch. However, the Spartans stranded both runners. In the bottom of the first, the Bruins sent xx batters to the plate, recording eight runs. The Bruins added three more in the second to go up 11-0.
- MSU, which stranded two runners in each of the first two innings, got things going in the third inning. Smiley was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Hawley singled, and pitcher Natalie Cable hit Sophia Grillo to load the bases. Doloszycki stepped in and delivered an RBI single, and she went to third as her base hit and an outfield error emptied the bases. Cable walked Greer and Beshears reached on an error to once again load the bases, triggering a pitching change. Brynne Nally got the first batter she faced, and then Payton Conroy moved the two runners into scoring position. Bernard came up and doubled through the left side, plating two more runs to make it a six-run inning.
- After surrendering six in the top of the third, the UCLA offense went to work to get the runs back. A leadoff double and an error put runners at the corners for Alejandre, who emptied them with a three-run shot over the wall in right. Starr got the next batter to ground out, but the next two batters each launched solo homers, and the Bruins put five on the board to establish a 16-6 lead.
- A one-out single by Sophia Grillo started off MSU's fourth inning rally, and Hannah Greer was hit by a pitch. Britain Beshears followed with a double, bringing home a pair of runs. Kirsten Caravaca followed with her second base hit of the night to bring home Beshears for a third run in the frame. In the bottom half, a two-run shot by Jordan Woolery made it 18-9. MSU turned a double play to get the first two outs of the inning, and Alyssa Galindo struck out Ramsey Suarez swinging to end it.
- MSU had its lone run in the top of the fifth on a homer by Hawley, her fourth of the season.
