Bernard, Doloszycki Homers Help Spartans to 10-6 Win Over Stetson

Raleigh, NC – Michigan State rattled off 12 base hits to out-slug Stetson, 10-6, in Friday's first game of the Marucci Classic at NC State. The Spartans improve to 11-10, while Stetson falls to 14-7 on the year.
MSU came out of the gates with an eight-run first inning, countering the 2-0 lead the Hatters took with a pair of solo homers in the top the first. Hannah Greer (double), Sydney Doloszycki (homer), and Kendall Smiley (single) each had RBI hits in the frame.
Stetson forced four runs across in the top of the third on a two-run homer and an RBI double, cutting MSU's lead to 8-6. The Spartans countered with a pair of runs on a Zoie Bernard homer with Payton Conroy aboard to push the Spartans to double-digit runs.
Carsyn Cassady threw five innings of one-hit ball, stifling the Stetson offense. She struck out six and walked just two, keeping the Hatters off the scoreboard. Hayley Arnold threw 5.1 innings of relief for the Hatters, scattering five hits and walking four. The starter Jenna Johnston took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits to open the game.
MSU has a second game on Friday, taking on Mercer.

HOW THINGS HAPPENED
- The Hatters went up 2-0 on a pair of solo homers in the top of the first. In the home half, MSU put together a rally, beginning with back-to-back base hits by Kendall Smiley and Hannah Hawley. After Sophia Grillo worked a walk to load the bases, Hannah Greer doubled to right to bring home a pair. Sydney Doloszycki then stepped in with a blast to left to empty the bases and make it 5-0. MSU continued to produce offense, as Britain Beshears and Kirsten Caravaca followed with base hits, and moved into scoring position on a ground ball by Payton Conroy. Beshears came home to score from third on a wild pitch. The top of the order came up, and Zoie Bernard walked and then took second on a wild pitch. Smiley delivered her second hit of the day to plate Caravaca and move Bernard to third, and Bernard came home on a wild pitch for the 8-2 advantage.
- Irianis Garcia hit a two-run homer as the second batter in the third, and after the Hatters loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, Nadia English brought home two with a double to left center to make it an 8-6 game. Carsyn Cassady came on to pitch, walked the first hitter to load the bases, but then retired the next three batters in order to end the inning.
- Payton Conroy drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the third, and Zoie Bernard homered to center to push MSU's lead out to 10-8.
