EAST LANSING, Mich. – Trey Augustine was named the recipient of the 2026 Mike Richter Award on Friday night, presented annually to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey. Established in 2014, this award is named after New York Rangers Hall of Fame goaltender, Mike Richter.
A two-time finalist and three-time semifinalist during his three seasons in East Lansing, Augustine was chosen ahead of two other finalists - Michael Hrabal of UMass and Josh Kotai of Augustana.
"It's an honor and a privilege to receive this award," said Augustine. "So many great goalies before me have achieved this and to be up there with them means a lot."
Augustine is the fourth Big Ten goaltender to earn the award, joining Kyle McClellan (Wisconsin, 2024), Jack LaFontaine (Minnesota, 2021) and Cale Morris (Notre Dame, 2018).
In 2025-26, Augustine finished with a 24-9-1 record which included an 11-5-0 record against ranked opponents and a 10-2-0 record against teams ranked in the Top Five. He set a new career-best with a .929 save percentage on the season, alongside a 2.11 goals-against average and 947 saves. His .929 save percentage ranks No. 6 among goaltenders nationally and his 2.11 goals against average is eleventh.
Augustine was a Top Ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in addition to being named Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and a First Team CCM/AHCA All-American for the second consecutive season.
After signing his entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on March 31, Augustine concludes his collegiate career second all-time in Michigan State program history with a .922 career save percentage, fifth all-time in goals-against average (2.40) and sixth in career wins (66) in just three seasons played.
