Women’s Tennis Topples Rutgers in Saturday Matinee Match

MSU women’s tennis triumphs in their first of two weekend matches, 4-1.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis secured their first match of the weekend with a 4-1 victory over Rutgers at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans advance to 11-10 and 4-7 in Big Ten Conference action.
Rutgers slides to 8-12 overall and 1-9 in B1G action.
Doubles action kicked off with redshirt junior Oriana Parkins-Godwin and senior Issey Purser taking their match at No. 3 doubles versus Stella Schmitz and Naomi Karki, 6-2.
Following close behind was the No. 43-ranked duo of sophomore Ellie Blackford and senior Matilde Morais, who won their match at No. 1 doubles, 6-3.
With the doubles match clinched in the Spartans' favor, sophomore Amara Brahmbhatt and redshirt junior Hanna Tsitavets's match at No. 2 doubles was left unfinished, standing at 5-5.
Singles matches began with the Green &White ready to claim their victory.
Brahmbhatt was first to finish her match at No. 1 singles, where she triumphed over Mai Nguyen 6-2, 7-5.
Blackford was victorious at No. 2 singles against Zuzanna Frankowska, where she secured an additional point for the Spartans 6-3, 6-1.
Rutgers fought back, taking No. 3 singles, where Morais fell to Karina Jumazhanova, 6-3, 6-4.
Clinching the match was Tsitavets at No. 4 singles over Zeynep Ilker, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
With the match clinched in MSU's favor, sophomore Nina Plihal and Parkins-Godwin's matches went unfinished.
