Brian Wozniak (Wahz-nee-ack) enters his second season on the MSU staff as the Spartans’ tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. He joined the program in December 2023, following head coach Jonathan Smith from Oregon State.
Wozniak, who spent six seasons (2018-23) at OSU under Smith, has coached three teams to a bowl game as a coach while playing in four as a player at Wisconsin.
Two of the tight ends Wozniak coached at Oregon State are currently playing in the NFL, Teagan Quitoriano (Texans) and Luke Musgrave (Packers), and four tight ends have earned all-conference recognition under Wozniak’s tutelage.
Wozniak has coached Jack Velling the past three seasons, including two at Oregon State (2022-23) and one at Michigan State (2024). Velling was named to the Mackey Award Watch List in 2024 and caught a career-best 36 passes for 411 yards his junior season.
As a sophomore in 2023, Velling earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors. He caught his eighth touchdown of the season against Arizona on Oct. 28 and in doing so, set a new OSU single-season record for receiving touchdowns by a Beaver tight end. The eighth touchdown also tied Velling with Chad Johnson (2000) and Shane Morales (2008) for the ninth most in a single season at OSU regardless of position. The eight receiving TDs tied for 33rd in the FBS and also tied for the lead for all tight ends in the FBS with TCU senior TE Jared Wiley. Velling also led the nation in the regular season in TDs/reception for tight ends with one TD every 3.6 catches, with eight scoring catches out of his 29 total receptions.
Thanks to help from the tight ends, the 2023 Oregon State offense was second in the regular season in the Pac-12 in yards per carry (5.06), while ranking third in rushing TDs (26), fourth in rushing attempts/game (35.75) and fifth in rushing yards/game (180.8). OSU finished fifth in the regular season in the Pac-12 in scoring offense (33.8 ppg), total offense (426.9 ypg) and total offense yards per play (6.56).
In 2022, Velling was named an honorable mention Freshman All-America selection, after snaring 16 catches for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Also in 2022, Wozniak worked with Hornung Award winner Jack Colletto in tight end formations.
Wozniak also coached Luke Musgrave, who was selected in the second round (No. 41 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, the highest-drafted OSU player in nine years. As a rookie in the NFL, Musgrave had 34 catches for 352 yards in 11 games during the 2023 season. Musgrave had 22 receptions for 304 yards and one TD his sophomore season of 2021, and also blocked a punt and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown in the Beavers’ win over Utah and was named the Pac-12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. In 2022, Musgrave was named to the Mackey Award Watch List for the nation’s top tight end, but only played in two games, with 11 catches for 169 yards and one TD. He tallied six receptions for 89 yards and one TD against Boise State in the season opener, and followed it up with five passes for 80 yards in OSU’s win at Fresno State.
In 2020 and 2021, Wozniak mentored Teagan Quitoriano, who earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 recognition both seasons. Quitoriano was invited to 2022 NFL Draft Combine and was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He has played in 23 games for the Texans the past three seasons (2022-24).
Wozniak coached Noah Togiai in 2019, who earned honorable mention Pac-12 Conference accolades after becoming just the sixth tight end in OSU’s history with 1,000-plus receiving yards. Togiai was also on the 2018 Polynesian Player of the Year Watch List and the 2019 Mackey Award Watch List.
After starting his coaching career as Oregon State’s offensive graduate assistant coach from 2015-17, Wozniak became OSU’s offensive quality control analyst from December 2017 to July 2018 before taking over the Beavers’ tight ends coaching position.
Wozniak was a four-year letterwinner at tight end at Wisconsin (2010-13), helping the Badgers to a bowl game all four years he lettered in Madison, including the Rose Bowl in three straight seasons (2010-12) and three consecutive Big Ten titles. He played in 47 career games and was a two-year starter. In 2014, Wozniak signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent.
A native of Loveland, Ohio, Wozniak was ranked among the top 40 tight ends in the country coming out of high school, and also earned several academic honors.
Wozniak earned his bachelor’s degree in communication from Wisconsin in 2014. He and his wife, Samantha, have three sons, Bronson, Conrad and Wyatt.
