Ben McCarthy is in his second year as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan State in 2025 after working under head strength and conditioning coach Mike McDonald at Oregon State for three seasons.
McCarthy was promoted to an assistant football strength and conditioning coach at Oregon State in May 2022. He was previously a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Beaver football program from January 2021 through April 2022 and an intern in the summer of 2020.
While at Oregon State, he assisted in the implementation and analysis of Catapult GPS data and also assisted in the return to play protocol.
Prior to OSU, McCarthy spent the 2019 season as a football strength and conditioning intern and more than two years as a performance nutrition student assistant at his alma mater, Wisconsin.
In 2018, he worked at EXOS as a performance specialist intern, working with a variety of teams including sand volleyball, tennis, football, and basketball.
McCarthy played football at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2016.
The Milwaukee native received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science from Wisconsin in 2020. He earned his master’s degree in biophysical kinesiology from Oregon State in June 2022.
McCarthy is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA and USATF.
