Bo Els is entering his fourth season overall at Michigan State and his third year as a graduate student coach with the defense. Els worked with the quarterbacks in his first year at MSU under offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in sports coaching and leadership.
Before MSU, Els graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where he played football and helped lead the Mustangs to back-to-back undefeated NAIA National Championships in his last two years. Els played wide receiver and returned kicks for Morningside, starting in 35 games. In his final two seasons, Els had a combined 165 receptions for 2,118 yards and 24 touchdowns. In his senior campaign, Els led the NAIA with 95 catches and was also the nation’s top punt returner, averaging 17.5 yards per return with two touchdowns.
His performances over those two seasons earned him two first-team all-conference selections as a wide receiver and another as a punt returner. In his senior year, Els also ranked second in the NAIA with 1,912 all purpose yards, earning him All-American honors.
After his senior season at Morningside, Els was a student assistant for the Mustangs coaching staff in the spring of 2020. There, he worked with receivers and helped lead off-season workouts before graduating in May. Els graduated with a 3.97 GPA and a degree in business-finance as well as a minor in sports management. He also received Dr. Tom Curry’s Business Award given to the top two business students at the school.
Before enrolling at Morningside, Els attended Southwest High School in Lincoln, Nebraska, and competed in football, basketball, and track; he was the Male Athlete of the Year for his class over all four years.
