An experienced coach and player personnel director with a proven eye for talent, Bryan Gasser enters his first year as Michigan State’s General Manager under Pat Fitzgerald. Gasser has coached and recruited multiple NFL Draft picks, NFL players and all-conference players during his nearly 20-year career in college football.
Gasser comes to Michigan State following a successful three-year run (2023-25) in the personnel department at Toledo, where he was the program’s Director of Player Personnel/Recruiting Coordinator for two years before getting promoted to General Manager of Player Personnel in 2025. The Rockets earned three consecutive bowl berths and compiled a 27-13 record the past three seasons, including an 11-3 season in 2023 and a win over Pitt in the 2024 GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. Gasser helped assemble the No. 1 recruiting class in the MAC in back-to-back years (2023-24), and the 2024 class ranked No. 65 overall in the 247 Team Composite rankings (180.60), the highest ever in the MAC since 247Sports started ranking classes in 1999.
He previously worked with Fitzgerald for one season (2022) at Northwestern as an offensive analyst.
Before working in player personnel, Gasser was an on-field coach for 14 seasons, most recently as the offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach at Akron for three years from 2019-21. With the Zips, Gasser coached WR Konata Mumpfield, who earned Freshman All-America honors by The Athletic in 2019 before transferring to Pitt and getting selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Rams; Mumpfield played in all 17 games and three playoff games for the Rams as a rookie.
Gasser, who previously coached at Toledo under Matt Campbell, went to Iowa State with Campbell in 2016 and spent three seasons (2016-18) in Ames as the Cyclones’ wide receivers coach. He also coached special teams his first two years. ISU reached bowl games in back-to-back seasons (2017-18) for the first time since 2011-12 during Gasser’s time on staff, where he coached two-time first-team All-Big 12 receiver Allen Lazard, who ended his career with school records in receptions (241), receiving yards (3,360) and 100-yard receiving games (12). Lazard finished his eighth season in the NFL with the Jets in 2025. In 2018, Gasser mentored Hakeem Butler to a record-breaking campaign in which he collected 1,318 receiving yards, the most ever by a Cyclone in a single-season; Butler was chosen in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Cardinals.
During his first stint at Toledo, Gasser held a variety of roles, including graduate assistant coach in 2010 and 2012, director of high school relations in 2013, and tight ends coach/special teams coordinator in 2014-15. In those five seasons, Toledo posted a 43-20 record and earned four bowl bids.
In his one season as director of high school relations in 2013, Gasser helped put together the top-ranked recruiting class in the MAC by Rivals.com and Scout.com. The group featured four future NFL Draft picks: RB Kareen Hunt (2017, third round, No. 86 overall, Chiefs), TE Michael Roberts (2017, fourth round, No. 127 overall, Lions), WR Rodney Adams (2017, fifth round, No. 170 overall, Vikings) and QB Logan Woodside (2018, seventh round, No. 249 overall, Bengals). As the tight ends coach, Gasser coached and helped develop Roberts, who set a school record with 16 TD catches in 2016 and played two seasons in the NFL with Detroit.
The special teams units also excelled under Gasser at Toledo, as the Rockets ranked No. 1 in kickoff coverage and No. 2 in punt return yards in 2014. He coached two specialists to All-MAC honors with placekicker Jeremiah Detmer garnering second-team accolades in 2014 and punt returner Corey Jones picking up first-team honors in 2015.
Gasser coached one season (2011) as the co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach at Division II Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, where he orchestrated an offense that set school records in scoring, total offense and passing yards per game.
A native of Northwood, Ohio, Gasser played college football as a tight end at Ohio Northern (2003-05), where he earned All-OAC and Academic All-OAC plaudits as a senior in 2025.
Following his playing career, he was as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons (2006-08), working with the tight ends and running backs while finishing his degree in business administration in 2009. He coached the offensive line and special teams at Otsego High School in 2009 while completing his master’s degree in sports administration from Bowling Green in 2010.
Gasser and his wife, Jessica, have two daughters, Witten and Emmitt.
