Gerren DuHart joined the Michigan State football coaching staff during the spring semester of 2021 as a defensive graduate assistant. DuHart assists coaching the defensive backs.
DuHart spent the previous two years working as a graduate assistant at Wayne State in 2019-20. In addition to helping coach the defensive backs, DuHart also assisted with video production during the 2019 season.
In his inaugural season with WSU in 2019, DuHart helped mentor three GLIAC All-Academic honorees, including Kyle Toth, who was a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American, a GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient, and the WSU Football Scholar-Athlete.
Three of DuHart’s defensive backs earned All-GLIAC honors in 2019, as Greg McDade (second team), Myron Riley-Brown (honorable mention) and Toth (honorable mention) were recognized.
WSU led the GLIAC in interceptions returned for a touchdown (4) in 2019, ranked second in interception return yards (161), finished tied for second in interceptions (10), and was third in fewest points allowed (21.9), while compiling a 7-1 league record.
DuHart played in 47 contests during his four seasons (2011-14) at Wayne State, starting his final 40 games at cornerback. He still ranks second in school history in career pass break-ups (27), fifth in passes defended (33) and 22nd in career interception return yards (89).
DuHart, who served as a team captain, was voted to the All-GLIAC First Team as a senior, as well as receiving USA College Football All-America Second Team honors in 2014. He was named to the Beyond Sports Network All-Super Region 4 Second Team in his final year.
The 2011 recipient of WSU's Defensive Rookie of the Year award, DuHart was instrumental in the Warriors advancing to the national championship game. He made two solo tackles including one for loss (tackled punter after a bad snap on fourth down) and a pass break-up in the win at St. Cloud. The following week, DuHart recorded a pass break-up and six tackles (5-1) in the victory at Nebraska-Kearney. In the national semifinal contest, he had a fourth down pass break-up in the final minute to preserve the win at Winston-Salem. DuHart recorded six tackles and his first career interception in national championship game. He also had his first career kickoff return vs. Pittsburg State.
A three-time member of the Coach's Academic Honor Roll, DuHart graduated in December 2014 with a bachelor's degree in media arts and studies.
DuHart spent three seasons (2015-17) as an assistant varsity football coach at his alma mater, Toledo Central Catholic.
The Toledo native earned Associated Press Division 2 All-State accolades as a senior for the Fighting Irish.
