Jarrod James begins his first season at Michigan State as an offensive graduate assistant in 2021. James will work with the offensive line under assistant head coach/offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic.
James has held numerous coaching roles throughout his career, most recently as the tight ends coach for the Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL in 2020 and as an intern coach for the Baltimore Ravens during the summer of 2019. He also served as an offensive assistant at Arkansas State during the 2018 season, helping coach the tight ends and assistant the offensive coordinator on weekly game plans.
James was a Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship Intern with both the Kansas City Chiefs (summer of 2017 and 2018) and the Minnesota Vikings (summer of 2018). He was also a scouting intern for the Vikings in the summer of 2016.
James played under Kapilovic at North Carolina as a center in 2011-13 and graduated from UNC with a double major in both kinesiology/exercise science and communications in 2015.
He earned a master’s degree from North Carolina in sport and fitness administration in 2018 while serving as an offensive graduate assistant coach for the Tar Heels.
James was an All-American offensive lineman coming out of Aycock High School and was a three-year starter before attending UNC.
James also has experience working in public policy, serving as a legislative research assistant for the North Carolina General Assembly from April 2019 to February 2020.
