Kenny Spencer, who played eight years professionally in the Arena Football League from 2012-19, is in his third year at Michigan State. He was promoted to a special teams analyst in 2022 and spending his first two seasons (2020-21) in East Lansing as a special teams intern. Spencer also has six years of experience training specialists of all ages.
Michigan State’s improvement on special teams in 2021 was one of the reasons behind a school-record turnaround, as the Spartans went 11-2 and won the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl over No. 12 Pittsburgh. Punter Bryce Baringer set a school record with his 48.4-yard average, which led the Big Ten and ranked fifth overall in the FBS. Baringer, a second-team all-conference honoree who was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List, ranked second in the Big Ten with 26 punts of 50-plus yards; overall, MSU ranked second in the league and 13th in the FBS in net punting (42.9 avg.). Placekicker Matt Coghlin became the school’s all-time leader in field goals (76) and points (382) as he closed out his illustrious Spartan career in 2021.
Spencer was named the Arena Football League Kicker of the Year and was a first-team All-AFL selection in his first season in 2012 with the Spokane Shock after setting a new league single-season record with 138 PATs along with four field goals. He also saw time with the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League in 2013 and played for multiple AFL franchises during his career, including New Orleans, Los Angeles, Arizona, Albany and Philadelphia.
In addition, Spencer spent time in NFL mini-camp with the Detroit Lions in 2015 and in CFL mini-camp with the Montreal Alouettes in 2017. He also had several workouts with NFL teams, including the Falcons, Titans, Jets, Patriots, Chargers and Buccaneers.
A native of Glenwood, Iowa, Spencer was a two-year letterwinner at North Alabama (2007, 2009) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in recreation. He also played two years at Ellsworth Community College and graduated with an associate’s degree before attending UNA.
