Mike Porter returned to his alma mater to join the Spartan hockey staff as the Director of Player Personnel in the June 2023. Michigan State was the first hockey program in the Big Ten to create such a position on its staff, and Porter is helping guide MSU into a new era within the ever-changing landscape of college hockey and college hockey athletics on the whole.
A licensed attorney and an alumnus of the program, Porter is helping prepare and educate the Spartan recruits and players in the evolving NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) space. He works in conjunction with Michigan State's best-in-class NIL model under the umbrella of the EverGreen program, which serves as a resource for all student-athletes. He champions strategic partnerships and resources to ensure the best possible support for the hockey program. He is also actively involved in alumni engagement and university outreach, with his duties including the daily oversight of the program budget, team and recruiting travel, and on-campus recruiting activities.
Prior to returning to the Spartan hockey program, Porter spent the previous fifteen years as a partner at two national law firms where he worked with professional hockey players, coaches and organizations on matters ranging from non-profit formation to professional service and endorsement contracts, and also had a hand in negotiating some of the largest coaching contracts in NHL history.
Porter previously served as an assistant varsity hockey coach at Detroit Catholic Central High School, where he helped his alma mater win six D1 state championships in a twelve-year coaching career. He has also served as a scout in the NHL, USHL and BCHL.
A native of Plymouth, Michigan, Porter spent two seasons playing junior hockey for the Springfield Jr. Blues (NAHL) and Wexford Raiders (OPJHL) prior to enrolling at MSU. He was a part of MSU’s 2001 Frozen Four team.
Porter graduated from Michigan State in 2003 with a degree in Business Administration – Pre Law and completed his Juris Doctorate degree the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in May 2006.
Porter resides in Plymouth, Michigan with his daughters Ani and Lucy.
