Patrick Sarni returned to his alma mater in the summer of 2023 as the head athletic trainer for MSU hockey.
Sarni joins the Spartan hockey staff after two years at Penn State in a similar role. In addition to serving as the primary medical provider for both the men’s golf and hockey teams, he was the medical host for the 2022 and 2023 NCAA men’s hockey regionals in Allentown, assisted in hosting the 2022 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four at Pegula Ice Arena, and was a preceptor for both Penn State athletic training students as well as MSAT students.
Sarni previously spent two years at Lake Superior State (2019-21) where he served as the head athletic trainer for the Lakers' 11 NCAA Division II programs as well as the NCAA Division I hockey program. He shared the duties as the head of the University Athletics COVID-19 action team during that time.
Prior to Lake Superior State, Sarni served as an assistant athletic trainer at Lawrence Technological University, where he worked as the primary athletic trainer for both the NAIA and ACHA DIII hockey teams, and the men’s and women’s tennis teams in 2018-19.
Sarni earned his Master of Science Degree in advanced athletic training at the University of South Carolina in 2018, simultaneously working with the with the men’s tennis and golf programs as a graduate assistant trainer.
During his undergraduate time at MSU, Sarni had the opportunity to assist with various progams – including the MSU hockey team - while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in athletic training and kinesiology. In addition, he completed a summer athletic training internship with the Detroit Tigers organization in 2015.
Sarni is Graston M1 certified as well as being certified in blood flow restriction, CPR and AED for professional rescue and as a NASM nutrition coach as well as a certified American Heart Association BLS provider. Sarni is a member of the National Athletic Trainer Association.
Sarni resides in Haslett with his wife, Jessie.
