Bethaney Wells enters her third season as the hitting coach for Michigan State’s softball program in 2026.
Over the last two seasons, Wells has helped mentor the Spartan hitters to 15 top ten single-game offensive performances in program history, including 11 in 2025 alone. The 2025 squad smacked 49 home runs in 45 games, good for fifth all-time in a single season. In addition, the 2024 squad had a .410 slugging percentage (ninth), only to improve to .443 in 2025, good for fifth place. Three of her sluggers have earned NFCA All-Great Lakes distinction over the last two seasons – both Hannah Hawley (First Team) and Britian Beshears (Second Team) in 2024, and Kaelin Cash (Second Team) in 2025.
Wells arrived in East Lansing after seven seasons at UNCG where she was an assistant coach under Janelle Breneman, the program's all-time winningest coach. Prior to her stint in Greensboro, N.C., Wells was an assistant coach for three seasons at William Peace.
At UNCG, Wells helped the Spartans to six SoCon regular season championships, three SoCon Tournament championships and three NCAA regional appearances, amassing an overall record of 233-124 in that span.
The UNCG Spartan offense reached historic heights under Wells' guidance, posting five of the program's top 10 seasons in total team runs, six of the top 10 seasons in total team doubles, six of the top 10 seasons in total team home runs, six of the top 10 seasons in total team RBI and seven of the top 10 seasons in total team slugging percentage. Plate discipline was improved with six of the top 10 seasons in total team walks.
A former standout student-athlete at NC State, Wells helped lead the Wolfpack to an ACC Tournament championship in 2013 and was named an NFCA All-America scholar athlete from 2011-13. Wells ranks third all-time for career home runs at NC State while also ranking in the Top 10 in career runs batted in and slugging percentage.
Wells graduated from NC State in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in nutrition science.
