Matt King is in his second year as an assistant football strength and conditioning coach at Michigan State in 2025.
King previously was the director of football strength and conditioning at UConn the past five years. He arrived in Storrs in January 2019 after serving as an assistant football strength and conditioning coach at Washington.
While in Seattle from 2016-18, King assisted in the design and implementation of the year-round training programs for UW’s football team. During his time under Coach Chris Petersen, the Huskies won two Pac-12 titles (2016, 2018), appeared in the 2016 College Football Playoff, and played in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl and 2019 Rose Bowl. He also worked with Jonathan Smith, who was the offensive coordinator at Washington during King’s first season in Seattle.
Prior to his time at Washington, King was the director of speed and athletic performance at Columbia from March 2015 to April 2016, where he designed and implemented speed training programs for the football team and he also worked with the field hockey team.
In March of 2012 King started work at his alma mater, the University of Maine, as an assistant speed, strength and conditioning coach. He began working with baseball, cross country, track and field, women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and assisting with football. King was promoted in 2013 to Director of Speed, Strength and Conditioning at Maine working directly with football. He also worked directly with men’s basketball, men’s and women’s ice hockey, field hockey, and softball. During his three-year tenure at Maine, the women’s basketball team captured the 2015 America East Conference regular season championship and the football team in 2013 won the Colonial Athletic Association Conference Championship and earned an NCAA FCS playoff appearance.
Prior to his time with Maine, King worked at Velocity Sports Performance and Premier Athlete Training in Foxboro, Massachusetts, as the Director of Sports Performance Operations starting in 2008.
King graduated from Maine in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. He later earned his master’s degree in kinesiology and physical education with a concentration in exercise science from Maine in 2015. A four-year letterwinner for the Black Bears from 2003-06, King was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior in 2006 and a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s best FCS defensive player. He was also named to the All-Atlantic-10 First Team and voted team MVP after leading the conference and ranking third in the country in sacks (11.5).
After his collegiate playing career ended, King signed NFL free agent contracts with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007 and spent time in camp with both teams at linebacker. He also signed contracts in the Arena Football League with the Georgia Force in 2008, the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2008, and in the now defunct AF2 Arena League with the Manchester Wolves in 2009.
King is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA-CSCS). He has earned Level 1 certification as a Sports Performance Coach by United States Weightlifting (USAW) and USA Track & Field (USATF). King also holds Level 1 Precision Nutrition (PN1) and Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist (FRCms) certificates.
King is married to the former Lauren Leveton, and they have two children.
