East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State University assistant women's basketball coach Cheryl Dozier was named today as the head basketball coach at the University at Buffalo. It is the first head coaching position for Dozier, who spent five years as an assistant with the Spartans.
Buffalo, a former member of the Mid-Continent Conference, begins play in the Mid-American Conference this season. The Bulls, who were 17-11 in 1997-98, have won 20 or more games five times in the 1990s.
Dozier, who also was an assistant coach at Ohio and Lake Superior State, replaces Sal Buscaglia who resigned after eight seasons with the Bulls to become the head coach at Manhattan College.
A native of Westland, Dozier is the second Spartan assistant in the last three years to get a head coaching position. Former MSU associate coach Sue Guevara left following the 1995-96 season to become the head coach at Michigan.
MSU coach Karen Langeland will begin an immediate search for Dozier's replacement.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for Cheryl," Langeland said. "She is taking over a program that has been successful in the past and has the potential to do well as a new member of the Mid-American Conference. We wish her nothing but the best."
