EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State outshot Western Michigan, 37-21, but managed just one goal in a come-from-behind tie on opening night Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.
Western Michigan's Matt Addesa beat Joe Blackburn for the game's first goal 3:25 into the third period on a Bronco power play.
Less than four mintues later, Spartan freshman left wing Joe Goodenow registered his first career goal on a short-handed breakaway. Goodenow stole the puck from a Bronco defenseman and deked WMU goaltender Matt Barnes.
Barnes was the story for most of the night, however, stoning Michigan State over and over. He made 36 saves overall, including 16 in the third period, and earned first-star-of-the-game honors.
WMU outshot the Spartans 2-1 in the overtime.
The tie broke an eight-game home winning streak for the Spartans, but extended MSU's home unbeaten streak to 14 games. It marks the second consecutive year that MSU opened its CCHA season with a tie against Western Michigan.
NOTES
* The last time Michigan State opened its regular season against Western Michigan was the first game ever between the two schools. It was also the first game -- and first win -- for Ron Mason as MSU head coach, a 7-6 victory on Oct. 19, 1979.
* All five Michigan State freshmen -- Joe Goodenow, Adam Hall, Andrew Hutchinson, Jon Insana and Shawn Mather -- made their collegiate debuts tonight.
* For the 20th consecutive meeting between MSU and WMU, at least one team was held to two goals or fewer.
* Joe Goodenow's third-period goal, his first career goal, was the first short-handed goal by a Spartan in 22 games (since Jan. 3, 1998, Sean Berens vs. Alaska Fairbanks).
* Mike York was held scoreless, ending a career-best 13-game point-scoring streak from the end of last season.
* Joe Blackburn has allowed just one goal in each of his last two Munn Ice Arena starts but has not come away with the win in either game.
