Women's Tennis Gets First Big 10 Victory

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State women's tennis team won its first Big Ten match against Penn State, 5-2, on Sunday, April 19. The victory improved the Spartans overall record to 10-8 (1-7 Big Ten).
In the singles competition, the Spartans were lead by junior Isabell Oelze, who missed the last two matches due to a foot injury. Oelze defeated Penn State's Alison Barnett, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. MSU freshman Natasha Skogerboe earned her first Big Ten victory, with a win over PSU's Kelley Margolis, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 3 position. At the No. 5 position, MSU sophomore Brooke Townsend picked up her 22nd overall singles victory by defeating Carly Drum, 6-2, 6-4. MSU freshman Kelli Hayes became second Spartan this season to reach 20 overall singles victories, after defeating Kim Luff, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 6 position.
The Spartans also fared well in the doubles competition, where they won their second doubles point of the season by winning two out of the three doubles matches. At the No. 2 position, the combination of junior Brooke West and Hayes defeated PSU's Margolis and Luff, 8-2. The Spartan duo of Skogerboe and Townsend secured their 20th doubles victory of the season after defeating PSU's Whiteside and Ovelman, 9-7, at the No. 3 position.
The Spartans will return home next weekend to finish out the dual match season. On Sat., April 25, the Spartans will host 53rd-ranked Northwestern, at 10 a.m. On Sun., April 26, the MSU will host 21st-ranked Wisconsin in its final dual match before the Big Ten Championships, which will be held at the University of Michigan from April 30-May 3.
