Women's Tennis Picks Up Second Straight Sweep

EAST LANSING Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis team improved its record to 5-2 overall (0-1 in the Big Ten) after defeating Miami of Ohio, 7-0, on Sun. March 1, at Oxford, Ohio. MSU was coming off of a 9-0 victory over Ball State on Sat., Feb. 28.
MSU won all six of the singles matches, including two that were Miami defaults. At the No. 1 position, junior Brook West defeated Elin Bengtsson, 7-5, 6-3. MSU freshman Natasha Skogerboe was victorious over Natalie Adams, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. Also winning singles matches for the Spartans were juniors Isabell Oelze and Jamie Tannenbaum. Oelze defeated Brooke Nelson, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position, while Tannenbaum defeated Gretchen Berrios, 6-0, 6-0.
The Spartans took the doubles point after two 8-1 victories. The MSU duo of West and Oelze defeated Bengtsson and Adams, 8-1, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position the Spartan tandem of freshman Kelli Hayes and Tannenbaum were victorious over Nelson and Barrios, 8-1.
The MSU women's tennis team will resume action during its spring trip to California, from March 7-14. The first match of the trip will take place against the University of California-San Diego, on Mon., March 9.
