One Day, Two Wins: MSU 17 - ASU 15: Junior 157-pounder Cory Posey scored a 9-7 victory in the final match of the afternoon to lift the No. 8 Michigan State wrestling team to a 17-15 win over No. 19 Arizona State on Sunday, Jan. 2 in Jenison Field House.
Arizona State took a 3-0 lead after third-ranked Steve Blackford took a 4-3 decision from 20th-ranked senior Greg DeGrand at 165 pounds. Senior Will Hill evened the score at 3-3 with a 13-8 win against Curtis Owens at 174, but Will McCleve gave ASU a 6-3 advantage after a 3-1 overtime win at 184.
The Spartans then ran off three consecutive victories to lead 14-6 after six matches. No. 1-ranked Nick Muzashvili got an 8-3 decision over Erik Gladish at 197, 16th-ranked junior Matt Lamb downed Kellan Fluckiger 10-3 at heavyweight and 18th-ranked sophomore Chris Williams scored a 19-4 technical fall against Adam Chavira at 125 to provide the eight-point margin.
The Sun Devils followed with three straight wins of their own to take a 15-14 lead heading into the final match of the dual meet. Daniel Hyman (133), No. 13 David Douglas (141) and No. 13 Quinn Foster (149) took consecutive decisions to give ASU the late lead.
Posey, who weighed in at 149 and moved up a weight class to 157 for the final match of the day, used a strong third period to overcome an early deficit and pull out a 9-7 decision over the Sun Devils? Nick Frost, giving MSU the 17-15 dual meet win. The Spartans are now 6-1 all-time against Arizona State.
?This is a huge win for us, and for Cory,? said Michigan State head coach Tom Minkel. ?We put Cory in there because we thought he gave us the best shot to win the meet and he came through for us.
?We were disappointed with the way we wrestled against Michigan and we made some adjustments today,? said Minkel. ?I?m most pleased with the intensity and toughness we showed today. Our guys wrestled hard in every match, no matter who they faced, and this is a very satisfying win for us.?

MSU 27 - Findlay 15: After defeating the 19th-ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State in Jenison Field house, the Spartans hit the road bound for Toledo, Ohio, where they faced the University of Findlay Roughnecks, the 3rd-ranked team in the NAIA division. The Spartans notched two falls, one technical, and one major decision to seal the victory 27-15.

Midlands Millennium Championships Recap: Redshirt freshman Gray Maynard and senior Greg DeGrand both placed for MSU at the Midlands Millennium Championships at Northwestern on Dec. 29-30.
Maynard shut out 1999 NCAA qualifier Griff Powell of Illinois in his first bout with a major decision 9-0. In his second match, Maynard defeated Nate Vasquez of Cal State Bakersfield 5-3. In the consolation semi-finals Maynard fell to returning All-American Brett of the University of Pennsylvania, 10-0, and ended up in sixth place due to a medical forfeit. Maynard is just the second Spartan freshman in recent memory to place at the Midlands.
DeGrand also had a great start to the day. He locked up a front headlock roll and jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Ian Nelms of Cal State Bakersfield only 30 seconds into the first period. He went on to claim the match 9-4. In his second bout DeGrand faced post-collegian Terry Murphy and lost a hard fought battle 7-5. DeGrand then defeated Illinois freshman Matt Lackey by a 4-1 margin in the seventh-place match.
Morgan and Chandler return to competition at Midlands: Three-time All-American and 1998 MSU grad David Morgan returned to the Midlands wrestling mats where he was twice crowned champion during his collegiate career. Morgan placed second, losing 6-2 to Eric Juergens of Iowa in the finals.
MSU assistant coach Roger Chandler also hit the mats representing the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club. Chandler was a Midlands place-winner during his collegiate career at Indiana University. His most recent appearance was a runner-up finish at the 1997 Midlands. Chandler was defeated in the quarterfinal round by former college nemesis Bill Zadick of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club 4-3 and fell 7-6 to Adam Tirapelle of Illinois in the third-place match.
In the Rankings: Senior Nick Muzashvili continues at No. 1 ranking at 197 pounds in the latest Amateur Wrestling News rankings (Jan. 3), a position he has held since the beginning of the season. Five other Spartans join him in the rankings. The team was ranked 8th in the last poll by InterMat Wrestling and was tied for 11th according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA):

To Be The Best, You Have To Beat The Best : The Spartans are in the midst of one of the toughest dual schedules in the nation as eight of the teams MSU faces were ranked among the top 25 in the preseason InterMat Wrestling/NWCA polls. The team has already hosted No. 8 Michigan and No. 19 Arizona State. MSU will also host No. 2/2 Iowa, No. 5/4 Minnesota, No. 4/3 Oklahoma State and Michigan again. On the road, the Spartans meet No. 3/5 Oklahoma, No. 20/15 Central Michigan and No. 25/20 Penn State.
Killer Conference: The Big Ten continues to live up to its reputation as the toughest wrestling conference in the nation. In the latest InterMat Wrestling/NWCA polls, the No. 7/9 Spartans were joined by seven other Big Ten teams: No. 2/2 Iowa, No. 5/4 Minnesota, No. 6/6 Illinois, No. 8/8 Michigan, No. 18/22 Wisconsin, No. 23/-- Purdue and No. 25/20 Penn State.
100 Within Sight: Tom Minkel needs just eight more victories to reach 100 for his career. He is 92-87-1 overall in his 12th season of coaching and 77-69-1 in his 10th season as the head coach at Michigan State.
Out of Sight But Not Out of the Rankings: Junior Pat McNamara is being evaluated and may return to the lineup on Friday after having pre-season shoulder surgery. Ranked No. 3 at 133 pounds in the preseason, McNamara has maintained the ranking through the first two polls of the year.
MSU-UM Match Included in College Series of Wrestling: FOX Sports Chicago will be televising the College Series of Wrestling, a joint effort between the U.S. Olympic Committee, the NCAA and USA Wrestling. The shows are funded through a USOC grant program with the Big 12 and Big Ten Conferences. The competitions will be produced by USA Sports Broadcasting, the broadcast division for USA Wrestling. Michigan State?s dual meet with Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 23 will be aired on FOX Sports Chicago on Friday, Jan. 28 at 8:30 p.m. EST Viewers across the nation can also watch these FOX Sports Chicago programs via satellite at the same time on Direct TV.
