PHILADELPHIA – Ten Spartans wrestlers were on the podium at the 29th Keystone Classic in Philadelphia on Sunday, including redshirt junior Kael Wisler who won the 197-pound bracket from the historic Palestra on the campus of University of Pennsylvania.
Wisler was one of two Michigan State wrestlers that made finals appearances on Sunday, being joined by redshirt sophomore heavyweight Max Vanadia who placed second.
It was a day of come from behind victories for Wisler who rallied in each of his first three bouts before defeating Drexel's Ibrahim Ameer, 7-0, in the finals. Wisler won his round of 16 match against Drexel's Justin Griffith, 6-3, with a takedown in sudden victory, and his takedown of Penn's Martin Cosgrove with 19 seconds left in the third period sealed the win in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Wisler escaped from bottom with 1:50 to go to earn a 5-4 win over Central Michigan's Luke Cochran.
Max Vanadia cruised through his opening bouts defeating Drexel's Dominic Petracci, 8-2, and Penn's John Pardo by major decision, 11-3. He advanced to the finals following a medical forfeit in the semifinals before falling in the finals to No. 15-ranked Jimmy Mullen of Virginia Tech by fall.
Redshirt sophomore Luke Vanadia was the top-placer among the remaining Spartans taking fourth at 184-pounds.
