East Lansing, Mich. - The No. 19 Michigan State field hockey team shutout Indiana, 9-0, Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium on Senior Day. MSU finishes the regular season with an 11-8 record (2-4 Big Ten). The Hoosiers fall to 1-11 (0-6).
Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) led the offensive attack for the Spartans, recording her second career hat trick while also notching one assist to finish the game with seven points.
MSU got things going early, scoring three goals within the games first four minutes. Sophie Rosmalen (Fr., Oss, Netherlands) started the barrage at the 33:57 mark, followed by a Maureen Halstead (Jr., N. Dartmouth, Mass.) goal only 47 seconds later. Cynthia Martin (Soph., Vancouver, B.C.) blasted a penalty corner attempt from about 10 yards past Hoosier goalkeeper Alexandra Kaufman with 31:12 remaining to give MSU an early 3-0 advantage.
Cooper scored the first of her three goals on a tip-in at the 15:55 mark. Theresa Pusateri (Fr., Homewood, Ill.) assisted on the goal. Cooper scored MSU's fifth goal after passing two IU defenders on a breakaway attempt with 11:00 remaining in the half. Jessica Wheeler (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the Spartan scoring in the first half at the 1:58 mark.
Michigan State scored three goals in the second half. Halstead and Wheeler each recorded their second goals of the game, while Cooper tallied her third goal. Julia Adams (Soph., N. Vancouver, B.C.) and Lisa Mitchell (Jr., Toledo, Ohio) each had two assists for the game.
Michigan State outshot Indiana 26-0, and held a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners.
MSU returns to action Friday, November 3 for the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor. Michigan State's seed is still to be determined.
