PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Michigan State field hockey closed out its weekend East Coast road swing Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0 to Rutgers at the Bauer Track & Field Complex.
With the decision, MSU moves to 5-10 overall and 0-6 in Big Ten action, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 9-6 (3-2 B1G).
Rutgers held a 15-1 advantage in total shots, a 5-0 edge in shots on goal, and earned six penalty corners to Michigan State's zero. Freshman forward Aiden Weinmann accounted for the Spartans' lone shot attempt of the match midway through the second quarter.
Junior goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger recorded one save while allowing three goals across three quarters of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Catherine Wolf manned the cage during the third period, yielding one goal.
Rutgers generated the early momentum in the opening quarter, breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute on an unassisted finish to claim a 1-0 advantage. The Spartan backline kept the deficit to one through the remainder of the period while turning aside further attempts.
Michigan State looked to answer early in the second frame when Weinmann worked into space in the 19th minute, but her shot rolled just wide of the cage. Rutgers capitalized late in the second period, adding an unassisted strike in the 28th minute to carry a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Scarlet Knights extended their lead early in the third quarter on a goal inside the circle to make it 3-0. Rutgers applied heavy pressure down the final stretch, drawing six penalty corners over the final three minutes. Munoz de Verger returned to the cage and turned away an on-target bid in the 59th minute, but the Scarlet Knights capitalized off a penalty corner sequence in the final minute to cap the 4-0 result.
